OME day this garden reporter will get her inquisitive -nose bashed in. The other day I dropped by to get acquainted with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pergande, 1603 Pleasant st, who have been mentioned to me by several people as “awfully good gardeners.” No one seemed to be at home. But an unusual plant in Mrs, Pergande’s window collection caught

a good look. Just as I had my face practically in the Pergande dining room and was deciding that this brilliant purple plant must surely be only a velvet hat decoration stuck in a flower pot, Mrs. Pergande appeared—in the window. Luckily she forgave me and invited me. in, for the Pergandes are full of gardening experience and information. ® » ” FIRST, that artificial looking plant. It came, Mrs. Pergande explained, from the favorite inexpensive plant emporium she and I both patronize frequently. (Don't rush—it was the only one they had.) The clerk called it “velvet plant” and thta’s exactly what it looked like if you can imagine .a green stem and leaves covered by a rich violet-purple fuzz or pile. It's easy to raise, takes the same culture as coleus. Full sun brings the tropical coloring to an exotic richness. It needs plenty of water and pinching back while it is growing, less water as it rests in the fall. The flower is insignificant. Its formal name is gynura auriantica and it seems to me a find for anyone whowwants color in an indoor plant collection. LJ » . MR. PERGANDE has for a number of years raised his own tobacco. About mid-March he will start seeds of white burley (he buys it

from a market gardener) in his

of tobacco's relative, the old fashjoned, fragrant nicotine of our flower gardens. He does not set his seedlings out until after frost, about midMay, when he puts them three feet apart. If they try to flower he pinches the blossoms off “so the strength goes to the leaves.” In the fall he cuts the tall plants before frost. lays them on the grass overnight to dry a bit, then takes them to the big attic, where he hangs them by their heels and gives them cross ventilation with all the windows open for a week or two.

HE STARTED raising his pipe material long before the war-time tobacco shortage. He says you can have cigars made from the leaves right here in the city if you prefer your nicotine that way. From the delightful fragrance of Mr. Pergande’s product they must make a very superior smoke. “Tell anyone who wants to raise tobacco,” Mrs. Pergande added, “to watch for those big tomato worms.” Since their huge appetite can strip a plant in no time she said Mr. Pergande pays her a quarter for every one she tracks down, She also confessed that she had occasionally, in the interests of high finance, borrowed some specially large worms from the neighbors’ tomatoes. But from the twinkle in Mr. P.'s eyes, I-think maybe he’s known it all the time.
