Womenfolk have been. fooling us long enough with their pious talk of how they were just ordained by nature to be ever-lovifig mamas, and it’s high time that. some &ealistic males gave some thought to the subject. ! Pr. Frank A. Beach, who heads the department of animal hehavior at the American Museum ‘of Natural History, has been looking into the question for a good many years now, and he is convinced that women are born with very little if any maternal instinct. “TI doubt if anyone is a ‘born’ mother,” Dr. Beach said today, hastily adding .that it's just a per sonal idea. “Although many women pride themselves on their maternal instinct, I'm inclined to believe that it's something they acquired! while growing up.” i Dr. Beach said that some women naturally would develop a greater maternal feeling than others, but | that he believes them all to be {equally lacking in the quality when |they' start out at birth. “Many chimpanzee mothers,” he sald, “have no idea of how to care for their first off-spring.
