-WASHINGTON, Feb. 8 (U..P.).o The cost of living for middleincome city workers reached its! highest peak since 1921 in midDecember, the labor department reported today. It said the consumer's price index stood at 1299 on Dec. 15| or 31.7 per cent higher than in August, 1939. The index uses the 1935-39 as the normal period in computing price rises. The new world war IT peak resulted from an increase in all basic family items except rents, the labor department said. In the Nov. 15-Dec. 15 period food costs jumped nine-tenths of 1 per cent, clothing was up % of 1 per cent and house furnishings increased %-of 1 per cent. Rents remained stable despite a crushing demand for housing for war veterans returning from overseas.
