By KENNETH HUFFORD An. important race is underway in Marion county and throughout the nation. There are no happy, noisy crowds, no pari-mutuel odds, no high-spir-ited competitors. Instead, it is simply the slow, methodical process of society keeping pace with civilization, today and everyday. Our courts are trying to hear a

growing number of legal violations. Take criminal court, for example.

‘| By holding night and Saturday aft-

ernoon sessions, 50 cases were heard in January. Judge William D. Bain disposed of 48. Juries disposed of two. This was accomplished during 24 judicial days, with Saturday afternoon sessions counting as half-days. 2 Heard ‘by Juries

Almost half this time—10 days— was consumed with jury trials in which only two of the 50 caSes were heard. Judge Bain spent 12 days on the bench without a jury. And, two days were devoted to arraignments and routine business of the court, What happened to the 50 defendants, charged with murder, assault and battery with intent to kill, robbery, larceny, forgery, vehicle taking and other felonies? A total of eight was sent to the Indiana state prison, two of whom were sentenced to 10 to 20 years; 10 were committed to the Indiana reformatory, with two being sentenced to 10 to 26 years; two were | sent to the Indiana women's prison, a murderer for life included; five went to the Indiana state farm and two were ordered confined to the county jail. In addition, 12 persons received only fines, while judgment was withheld or sentence suspended in five other cases. Only six of 50 defendants went “scott free” during the month. 57 New Cases Filed

While Judge Bain and juries were disposing of 50 defendants, 57 new cases were filed during January. Society lost this lap. In 1945, a total of 16 murder cases
