George Arliss,

LONDON, Feb. 8 (U, P) —George Arliss, one of the foremost creators of character joles on the British

Mr, Arliss, who once said that “even my most ardent admirers admit that I am not much to look at,” remained Arliss in all the roles he played—Voltaire, Disraeli, Wellington, Alexander Hamilton and Rothschild.

He always choked personally, however, costumes, props and the language of the period before attempting to portray a character. Born George Augustus Andrews in Bloomsbury, a district of London, April 10, NOD Ee sarted work as an apprentice in his father’s print shop. He dabbled in amateur theatricals at night, and finally made his debut as a super” with the Elephant and Castle company in a melodrama, “Saved From the Sea.” Came to U. 8. In 1901

Bets May Be $175 Million

"(Third of a Series)

By JACK BELL Times Specisl Writer MIAMI, Feb. 6-—Florida, a state with only two and a quarter million inhabitants, is scattered over one of the union's largest state areas. Because of the huge swamp areas we're listed as one of the nation’s last frontiers. But during the 1945-46 racing season we're going to bet about $175,000,000—and take better than 5 per cent of it for state use. Last year, despite the war, our nine greyhound tracks handled $19,000,000. This season the West Flagler Kennel club of Miami has han- - died: nearly 46500000. in hall of its allotted 80 nights. * - ~ THERE ALSO is a Spanish game spelled Jal Alai and pronounced Hi-Li. Its mutuel play for a third of the season is a million and a quarter dollars. Tourists have to reserve seats six weeks in advance. When folks come down with pari-mutuel intent we sock ‘em right between the covers of their wallets, Every time a man bets a dollar at Hialeah we get 15 cents. . » » - OF COURSE, our take is chicken feed compared to New York, where the mutuel play averaged . + $2,000,000 a day for 185 days; or California where they're averaging $2,400,000 a day and taking 13 per cent of it. In New York the state gets 4 per cent, the track 6; under California’s sliding scale it's roughly 5 per cent for the state, the remainder for the track. In Florida the horse track gets 7 per cent of the mutuel take, the

The fact that California offers far bigger purses than does Florida doesn't affect Florida racing too greatly because there are lots of good nags. This year Hialeah will give $1,200,000 in purses. Gulfstream has raised its purses to a $2000 minimum with the same figure for Tropical park.
