What Is Ahead For the People In Atom Age?

By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Soripps-Howard Staff Writer * WE OUGHT to respect the opinfons of our generals and politicians, But when they tangle with scien tists on the subject of atom bombs, I side with the scientists. 3 They discovered how to split atoms. They invented the method of making the and supervised its manufacture, So far only three have been used: The one, dropped in the experiment in New Mexico, and the two which destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Since then every professor connected with the enterprise expressed regret at his part in it, and warned up to give up the idea of atom J.energy as a war weapon. . EJ ~ FOR EXAMPLE, Dr. Urey, who helped develop the bomb, testified before the senate not long ago that there is no place on the planet ‘where these bombs can safely be stored. He hoped all on hand would be destroyed and none ever be made in peacetime. - To the politicians and generals, he explained his idea of what the disastrous consequences would be if an armament race should occur now. It's not a question of what we might be able to do to ‘our enemies. It's a question of what we could do to ourselves. » »

YOU MAY BE inclined to scoff at the scientists. I can’t feel so blithe about it. People have laughed and sneered at ledrned men in every historical age, especially when they annolinced drastic changes in humanity's course. : They are not inclined tc double talk. Their training teaches them to be direct, explicit and honest. Since this cannot always be said of military men and politicians who speak largely in platitudes, it seems reasonable to me to take Dr. Urey seriously.

. REVERSE frayed collars and cuffs, and give hubby's shirts a tun for the better and the longer life that's urgently needed. Shirts are still scarce. To keep your man from going shirtless, Mary Brooks Picken, author of “Mending Made Easy,” tells how to prolong the life of those. he has. - LJ ~ REVERSE COLLAR: If collar only is frayed, turn under side of collar rightside up, and it will look as good as new. To remove rip with razor blade to separate collar from mneckband. Remove and fold collar in half, end to end. Mark center point with a pin. Now, fold and pinmark neckband at center. Insert collar into neckband, matching center of collar and band. Pin as shown in illus Baste over pins, sure stitches catch underside of neckband. Stitch on machine, and there you are. . ® = =» REVERSE NECKBAND AND COLLAR: If they're both the worse for wear, remove the two at one fell swoop by ripping neck+ band from shirt. Steps in illustration 2 show how to replace collar and neckband on shirt. Pin ends of collarband to front edges

tion 1.

of shirt, as shown Now, pin center-back of collarband to centerback of shirt, as shown B. Next, pin the rest-of collar in place. a Slipping the neckline of shirt inside collarband, pin along old stitching line on neck of shirt, as shown C. Baste, making sure to catch underside of neckband; sew on machine, and you have a shirt with a long life ahead. » » . FRAYED CUFFS. The technique of ripping, turning and pinning French cuffs back to original position on sleeve, basting and machine-stitching, is the same as for collars—just reverse them. For plain cuffs, use either of the following directions: If the sleeve length must be kept intact, bind the badly frayed shirt cuff with bias binding, as shown D in illustration 3. . For the frayed cuff that can be turned in without sacrificing sleeve length, rip and turn in the worn edges, as shown E.' Then pin, baste and stitch, as shown P, around the edge of the cuff, in two rows kept an even distance apart. If there are thin pldces or holes in the “shirt, reinforce or patch with pleces that you cut from the back or front of the tail at the sides.
