‘Joy to Hear’
Talented Violinist Gives
Sterling Performance.
By HENRY BUTLER In a man’s world, women musl-
cians, like women doctors, have to be good to build a career.
Erica Morini, violinist, who gave
a recital sponsored by the Indian-
apolis Matinee Musicale yesterday
in’ Ayres’ auditorium, is a splendid musician.
Doubtless some critics have paid
her the dubious compliment of referring to her vigor and depth. of tone. Such comparisons are meaningless, save as they reflect lingering superstitions about “superior” and “inferior” sexes.
“almost masculine”
With extraordinary musical in-

Only One Franck No one has ever written just like Cesar Franck, although there have been lots of imitators. The sombrely dramatic effects of shifting minor-major chords, the curiously wide-ranging melodies, often in descending sequences, and the Franck trick of repeating part of a musical statement with a slight change for emphasis—all these have never been equalled. The A major sonata, sometimes reminiscent of Franck’s quintet, concludes with an allegretto containing a wonderful canon. Piano begins, violin follows, in one of the most celebrated and beautiful applications of the “Three Blind Mice” principle of counterpoint. Yesterday's performance of the sonata was a joy to hear, Miss Morini concluded her program with two Wieniawski compo-
