Uncle Harry with some pity as being the victim of (a) an eccentric will requiring him to live in the homestead with his two sisters, and (b) noisy and quarrelsome rivalry between Lettie and Hester as to which sister was more important to his comfort and happiness. Maybe I'm just-a dope, but I couldn't at first detect signs in Uncle Harry of the scheming self-

B|ishness that led him to commit the

murder Lettie was blamed for, What's more, both sisters seemed so poisonous (excuse the word—-it must have been the cocoa Hester drank) at first that Lettie's Sydney | Carton nobility in the final scene | stretched the garters of the imagination? It would take a pre-war German Ph.D. dissertation-writer to analyze the play and demonstrate, in 587 pages plus appendix, just what's wrong with it. In any case, it doesn't have that fine inevitability a first-rate play should have, and from where I sit, it looks like another of those perilous patch-and-rewrite jobs that always involve actors in grief,

Has Good Moments

taining. It's unusual, it’s got good moments and it pleases an audience, as it did last night's enthusiastic crowd. Among the best individual performances, besides Mrs, Skyrme’s, were those of Dorothea Houppert as Hester, Bgss Wright as Nona, the Quincy's maid, and Mr, Lemons as Uncle Harry himself.. Maybe there Fmight have been more of a jovial homicidal] gleam in Uncle Harry's eye early in the play, but Mr. Lemons shambled convincingly through the role, Mrs, Skyrme was especially memorable in the final scene, which, like the others, was well designed and excellently lighted. Unlike other recent Civic productions, “Uncle Harry” requires three changes of set. To the credit of the technical department, let it be said that all staging details are done with first-rate professional skill.

Stage at Entertaining

Monkey Act Headlines Bill at Keith's Theater.

For some reason, Dodson’s monkeys seemed to please yesterday's audience at Keith's more than did any of the other acts. That's not panning the rest of the show, which began the usual week-end run. It merely suggests that monkeys, like trained seals, have a special fascination. Neither of Dodson's monkeys, the ttle one or the medium-sized one, ‘had what you'd call great talent. The larger one (homely as all get out) had an extremely limited repertoire. But there. they were, dressed up in monkey-size business suits, looking as absurd as the} simian critters on weekly magazine covers, : Patter. Helps, Too

That's not to say it isn't enter-|

Dodson’s pattef helped a lot, and, together with the all-too-human wilfulness. of the little monkey, made up an act that drew hearty laughter from the usually indifferent afternoon audience. The bill opened with the Callahan sisters, “slick-chick” exponents of tap-dancing. It continued with Paul Burke, lightning cartoonist, one of whose surprising tricks is drawing three cartoons simultaneously with both hands and right foot. Mr. Burke can draw betten with his right foot thau most of us can “with our right hand, whichis something. Rudy Horn, who also emceed the show, had some good gags and some unsually funny eccentric dance routines, George Lovett & Co, a rather novel act combining music and what they call telepathy, finished up a better-than-average stage bill.
