LEGION ORGANIZES T0 BACK TRAINING BILL
WASHINGTON, Jan. 8 (U. P).— The American Legion has set up a national program to support its plan for universal peacetime military training. The program will be directed by a national security council headed by past national commander Warren H. Atherton of Stockton, Cal. It will hold its first meeting here Jan, 26-27. ‘n-addition, state Legion commanders have been instructed to appoint five-member committees in each congressional district to build up support for the plan. The plan includes a year of military training for all youths between the ages of 18 and 20. They would take four months of basis trainine during the summer following their tion from high school. They thén could choose one of several optional plans for completing their training.

Appeal for Support The Kyoto shrines, in particular. will be heavily hit. The government had found a handy excuse for supporting them in the fact that many of them are thousands of years old. Or pretend to be that old. Thus they come under the classification of “historical monuments” and could be subsidized as national treasures. The shock of learning that the economically fat days of Shinto are at an end has stirred the priests to action. It was noted recently that many Shinto priests, breaking an ancient custom, have discarded their robes to attend meetings to appeal to Shinto believers for financial support. The elimination of Shintoism| from the public schools, however,! already has begun. The Japanese educational authorities are removing the little shrines that used to be in every school before which the| pupils worshipped every afternoon |
"lat the close of the session.
| Furthermore, they are beginning to rip from the textbooks all references to the “divine nature” of the country and to the glorification of shrines.
