OE WILLIAM SAYS. ...
NEW YORK, Dec. 29.—They brought Freddie Schott in from the bushes where he had hit 1.000 (43 starts, no defeats) and he couldn't get the ball past the infield. Not even against the erratic, unimaginative pitching of
Baksi the Bullski. oo This was supposed to be the transplanted Ohioan’s first start against a name fighter. I don't know what name they use for the Bullski but it can’t be very flattering. Young Schott was authentic green pea yet his vastly more experienced opponent, who is mentioned in terms of a challenger for the heavyweight championship, could do no more with him than muss him up a bit Only once did he have the youngster in distress. This was in the fifth when he bounced three triples off the Schott chin and upended his head with a full swing right uppercut. There were 30 seconds left to go. The Bullski, who is that way, simply let them go. I'm afraid you can forget about him. In fact, it should be a pleasure Schott may rate another look. He takes a punch well and is game enough, That's always a good recommendation in a big fellow The rap against him now is that he just can't fight. He looks as if he has the zest for it but he is so far away at the moment that it is almost absurd to speculate on his future, if any. For the most part he looked strictly Golden Gloves. ss 8 = ’s = =» It was beef trust night at the Garden. Some 2000 pounds of choice cuts were dumped into the ring As Mr. Jimmy Johnston commented: “It reminds me of the old white hope days only it's worse.” As a promotion the idea is to uncover some one who will be ready to take on Louis or Conn. Most of those on display would have looked better covered. Of the lot I liked Jimmy Evans of Brooklyn best; he's 21 and won the fleet championship at Jacksonville He throws a right hand uppercut as if he meant no good to the other fellow. Mr. Johnston thinks he looks like old Fred Fulton, an uncalled for knock "The hit of the evening, though he seldom did, was Jimmy Relly of Tampa who is as black as Goering's fate. For him the name Reily seemed incongruous so he changed it to Thamus O'Brien which 1s his fighting caption. He looks like a Fred Astaire in burnt cork and jabs in jive. He furnished the comedy relief and relief of some sort was needed. Mike Jacobs, the promoter, had the right idea He fled for Florida. ~ CI I | s & = Incidentally, Prof. Billy McCarney, connoisseur of cauliflowers, agrees with this space that a quick, casual appraisal of young heavyweights can lead to embarrassment. “Most big fellows are naturally awkward looking, they do not co-ordinate smoothly and therefore they fail to impress you,” he says. “That's why you should go along with them for awhile.” : At the same time the professor admits the current crop of heavyweights does not exactly evoke memories of Corbett, Fitzsimmons, Jeffries and Dempsey. } “But I wonder if they are, taken as a group, any less talented than the charlatans we were forced to look at after the other war. Do you mind if I list a number of those priceless gents. Well, there was Andre Andersen. And Joe Bonds, Jack Thomson, Dutch Seifert, Martin Burke, Farmer Lodge and Hank Hankinson, Big Boy Petersen, Tony Puente, Otto Von Porat and Meyer Christner. And there were others,
. . ” : ~ . . 2 “Tut Jackson, for instance?” : The professor winced. Jackson was a large gentleman of color out of Ohio. The professor piloted him into the big town on the crest of a furious build up and got him flattened in a matter of _ seconds. | “At that, he was no worse than the others I've named. He was a’bum when he started and a bum when He finished. But the point 1 wish to make is that our manpower was practically intact then. It hadn't been touched by the war as was the case this time. And still we had just as many clowns posing as heavyweights, and they fought in wind-ups and the promoters charged top prices. Jacobs has simply picked up where Rickard and the others left, off.”
