A few weeks later, a federal grand jury at Wichita indicted Will Zurbucken, superintendent of the Kansas highway patrol and a Republican, on’ income tax evasion charges. It alleged that Zurbucken failed to declare a $405 tax on $5950 he had been. paid for protection by Kansas liquor runners. Was Acquitted Gov. Andrew Schoepple denounced the indictment as “hokum” W%nd called it an attempt by U. 8. District Attorney Randolph Carpenter, a Democrat, to embarrass his administratign. ‘ Mr. . Zurbucken was tried, and acquitted on Thanksgiving day. Mr, Carpenter produced as witnesses more than a score of liquor deal~ ers who said they had paid 25 to 50 cents a case for protection. Jurors said they did not believe confessed law violators. ‘So far, however, Zurbucken has not been reinstated by Gov. Schoepple. Today there are 433 federal liquor permits on record in dry Kansas.
