Defies Truman by Speeding Palestine Measure.

By JAMES E. ROPER United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Dec. 18.—A de-

favoring unlimited immigration of Jews into Palestine,

adopted a resolution asking the

United States government to use its good offices to that end. } In doing so, the senate defied the wishes of both President Truman and Secretary of State James PF. Byrnes, They wanted it to delay action at least until the recently-ap-pointed Anglo-American committee could carry out its study of the Palestine problem.. This would be within 120 days. . Spurns Warning The, senate ‘would not wait. It continued its session well past the dinner hour last night in order to pass the resolution in the midst of a pre-holiday rush of legislation. The senate brushed aside a warning that the action might lead to American involvement in a religious war in the Middle East, The warning came from Senator Thomas C. Hart (R. Conn), who offered a} watered-down version of the resolution.. He mustered some support, but was defeated easily by a voice ‘The resolution seeks to open Palestine to Jewish immigration “to the maximum of its agricultural and economic pdtentialities.”
