By LOUISE FLETCHER re Times Woman's Editer ; THERE WAS ONE NICE THING about gasoline rationing. It was reasonably safe to do your hair up in pin-curls, don an old bathrobe and settle down of an evening with the latest best seller. Chances were unexpected guests wouldn't be poking your doorbell anyway, so the cold cream and housecoat routine didn't offer too many hazards. Now you've got to look as pretty as possible right up to curfew time. This winter's “at home” costumes make it a pleasure, though. They're as richly colored and as handsomely styled as the smartest of evening dresses. In fact, some of the clothes for private-life are so elegant and bear such a close fashion resemblance to formal designs that they can play a dual role.

Pajamas, hostess gowns, slacks and robes have lifted a lot of the style tricks used in the oltfhts meant for public appearance. They have unusual sleeves, rich fabrics, jewel and metallic embroidery, bright Solor combiiiations and sleek drapery. (Theyre “tops” as Christmas ts, 00.) / f ) : ‘ Perhaps the most lavish’ of all the fireside styles is the dinner—athome dress, two examples of which are pictured. Mme. Eta designed the first one for introduction by the National Cotton council as one of its American designer series. (It's not in stock yet, but they're expecting it/in at Block's.) Mme, Eta describes the gown, which is made of gray Bernside corduroy, as “elegant cotton for an elegant lady.” The gown is part of the designer's current collection which got its inspiration for flowing line, rich fabric and intricate ornamentation from the 13th century. .

Green, blue and brown striped taffeta buttoned with jewels makes the second dining-at-home dress (No. 4). The quaint bodice has bracelet-length sleeves puffed at the shoulderline. From the winter collection of Foxbrownie, it is being shown at Ayres’ A little more informal-is the hostess pajama costume shown in pictures 2 and 3. (In a different forin you could drink the costume because its fabric, derived from milk, is Aralsc) Worn here by Claire Niesen who appears on the National Broadcasting company's “Backstage Wife” program, the black pajama costume has a bare midriff.
Emily Wilkens designed it and uses bright pink piping to tie up with the long-sleeved coat (photo 2). that may be worn over it- on chilly
