Performance at Murat to Be|
Repeated Tonight. By HENRY BUTLER Anyway, the Ballet theater had a good orchestral background, The - background, supplied by some 40 members of the Indian-
apolis Symphony orchestra, was a prime feature of last night's open-
~performance of -the-Bailet—the-1—
ater at the Murat. It will be repeated tonight. Prevalent and unverifiable rumors that the local representative of 8. Hurok, grand impresario . of the ballet group, had refused free admission to service men, could only partly explain the . paltry A house. The rest of the explanation might be a sort of public and widespread allergy to ballet, which illness is pardonable. For the beautifully timed and executed leaps and similar maneuvers of the company are right now only partly meaningful, and will reinain only partly meaningful until some way is devised to make ballet is significant locally as music is.
Ballet a Luxury
When technical perfection plays o half-full houses, the public gets blamed. But the public is nbt to blame, nor are the zealous local gents fighting for, let's say, the In{ianapolis Symphony orchestra Right now, ballet dancing, in the higher brackets, is a luxury few communities can afford. Who in the name of holy things would devote himself to a career as ballet dancer without some assurance of gainful recognition? Last night's program included the “Firebird,” in which the principals were Nora Kaye, Dimitri Romanoff, Diana Adams and John Taras, and for which Stravinsky conveniently wrote the music. gram was “Interplay,” with music by Morton Gould and choreography by Jerome Robbins. The concluding number was “Prineess Aurora,” a large and extravagant number, with an impressive cast and plenty of scenery.
