“By 3. EDWARD MURRAY United’ Press Staff Correspondent ROME, Dec. 4 —Wearied by 18 hours of continuous conferences, Alcide De Gasperi went to the royal
HOUSE at 3 a. m. Today to accept af
formal charge to head the new Italian government. 3 The Socialists won the key interior portfolio in the new cabinet. The 11-day government crisis was settled at 3 a. m., after a “now or never” conference that started at 9 a. m. yesterday. At that time the Liberal party reversed its previous stubborn stand and agreed that the ministry of interior should be held by a Socialist. De Gasperi, leader of ‘the Christ ian Democrat party and foreign minister in the previous government of Ferruocio Parri, will retain the foreign office portfolio in addition to his premiership. The ministry of interior post, over which the six political parties wrangled for five days, was a real plum for the Socialists. It controls the police and appointment of the provincial prefects during the months of campaigning leading up to national elections next spring. Observers considered the Socialist victory on this point does much to neutralize the rightward swing of the government resulting from De Gasperi’s appointment as premier. Togliatti to Remain The Liberal party, a conservative political body, caused the fall of the Parri coalition government by resigning in an effort to swing the control of Italian affairs more to the right. De Gasperi will be the first Catholic party premier since 1870, He has promised to broaden the government by including some nonparty statesmen, possibly including the aged Vittorio Orlando, World War I prime minister. It is understood that the Communist leader, Palmiro Togliatti, will remain as minister of justice. Socialist Pietro Nenni probably will continue as vice premier, In most essentials, the new government—fifth since the allies
