Canned Goods to Be Sent To Europe, Far East.
Catholics of the Indianapolis archdiocese will open a campaign
the needy of Europe and the Far East,
The Very Rev. August Fusseneger, archdiocese charity director, said the drive will extend throughout every parish in the 38 counties of the archdiocese. It is part of a national appeal being made by the National Catholic Welfare conference, The campaign, Monsignor Fussenegger added, has the special biessing of Pope Pius XII. In a cable sent to the Most Rev. Amleto G. Cicognani, apostolic delegate to the U. 8, Pope Pius XII declared: “With heartfelt paternal gratitude and consolation, we have learned of the renewed call which is being
made upon the charity of the de-
voted Catholic people of the United States by their zealous bishops and pastors during the month of December on behalf of the afflicted peoples of Europe and the islands of the Pacific and we hasten to invoke the richest blessings of the God of love and mercy upon all who direct and share in this truly noble crusade of generous and genuine Christian charity. Depths of Desolation “Receiving daily as the common father piteous appeals from every corner of the earth for help and succor and knowing, therefore, only too well the depths and extent of the desolation caused by the war throughout the world, it is with deep consolation and with a heart overflowing with affectibn that we bestow our apostolic benediction on this latest evidence of the zeal and charity of our beloved children in the United States in their Christ. like efforts to bring relief in ever increasing measure to the innocent victims of war.” Monsignor Fussenegger said the relief drive is the 10th organized by the conference since beginning of world war II. In the nine previous campaigns, a total of 43 million pounds of food. and clothing-were collected, valued at an estimated $35 million.
