WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 (U.P) — Americans had « heavier thirst-last|

year than the year before but they still drank far less than in 1942 the last year in which unlimited whisky production was permitted. Allied Liquor Industries, Inc, a

beverage trace organization, reached deep into its statistical grab-bag today and came up with the fact that the average American (counting -. men, women and children) drank 1.26 gallons of liquor in 1944. The figures are based on the country’s total population, since there is no way to separate drinkers from non-drinkers,

increase in “bootleg” liquor .which resulted from shortages and higher liquor prices. ’ The figures do include Kansas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma. If the people of these three “dry” states had not been included, the average U. S. drinker would have downed 1.42 gallons of liquor last year. District of Columbia drinkers were the country’s most enthusiastic. they averaged 4.09 gallons each. Nevadans were second with an average of 3.33. Had Assistance The A. L. I. pointed out, however, that the eapital's drinkers had “considerable” assistance from out-of-town visitors and liquor pur. chasers from neighboring Maryland and Virginia who liked the district's lower tax rates. Nevada's high-rank was attributed jointly to its tourist trade and its relatively high ratio of aduits. North Carolina was the most tem~ perate of the country’s “wet” states, averaging only slightly more than a third of a gallon per person, about three-fourths of the state is dry, however, as a result of local option. The country’s biggest state, New York, led in liquor consumption} with 19,450,709 gallons but lagged in |. per capita consumption. New Yorkers drank 1.54 gallons each in 1944.
