Rules
By JANE STAFFORD Science Service Stall Writer IF YOU ARE using DDT around your home to get rid of roaches, insect pests, take the same precautions. you would with any other powerful insecticide. <The National Safety council has drawn up the following five simple rules for use of DDT: 1. When DDT, avoid inhaling the mist as much as possible. 2. Avoid skin contacts with the spray. Take special care to keep it bff the hands when filling the spray gun. If you do get any on your skin, wash it off with soap and warm ‘water. 3. Put away food and cooking and eating utensils before spraying a
room. 4. Do not spray household pets. 5. Store DDT in a safe place where children cannot reach. it.
NO ILL effect to a person has ever been traced to this insecticide and none is expected if it is properly handled. Inadvertently swallowing it, however, would result in serious poisoning, the safety council warns. Its use for dusting in concentrations up to 10 per cent in an inert powder will have little hazard. The use of solutions up to 5 per cent in petroleum distiilate involves only temporary and comparatively moderate exposure to low concentrations and should be equally safe. However, irritation of the skin will occur following heavy exposure to the mist. Therefore, you are advised to wash all parts of the body that come in contact with the spray, using soap and warm water to get it off. Mist from the DDT bomb will be toxic, the safety council warns, if a sufficient quantity of it is inhaled. . So be careful to hold the bomb away from your face when the release valve is opened. Although we think of DDT as new, the chemical, dichlore-diphen-yl-trichloroethane, was synthesized 71 years ago.
