"WAGNER: ALKURE, the entire Third Act sung by Helen Traubel, soprano, Herbert Janssen, baritone, and vocal ensemble of the Metropolitan Opera, with the
-| Philharmonic-Symphony ' orchestra
of New York, Artur Rodzinski conducting. (Columbia, M-581, eight 12-inch records) A great album, containing one of the most ambioperatic recordings ever ‘made
packagé for Wagnerian fans, for it brings into their. living rooms, whenever wanted, the magnificent and climactic third act of a favorite opera, with the voices of the same stellar artists who in the work at the Metropolitan. Besides the peerless Traubel and Janssen, the cast includes Irene Jessner, Anna Kaskas, Doris Doree, Martha Lipton and others. From the technical as well as the artistic standpoint, the recording is perfect. PROKOFIEV: ALEXANDER NEVSKY, Cantata, (Op. 78), performed by the Philadelphia orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy, with Jennie Tourel, mezzo-soprano, and the Westminster choir, John Finley Williamson conducting. (Columbia, M-580, five 12-inch tec ords.) The initial presentation on records of one of the most moving
and powerful of contemporary choral works. The music was written in 1038 by the great Russian composer, Prokofiev, for the stirring Soviet motion picture, ~ Alexander Nevsky. Prokofiev was so impressed with the patriotic story of the Russlans’ defense of Novgorod against the invading Teutonic knights in 1242, that he expanded his movie music into a cantata for mezzosoprano, chorus snd orchestra. It is composed of seven musical pictures, each of which presents a phase of the famous national epic. The music is powerful and stirring, and runs the gamut of emotions, from the despair of defeat to triumph of victory. . ROBINHOOD: BASIL RATHBONE with supporting cast. (Columbis, M-583, four 13-inch records.) A tingling and dramatic re-enact
It's Lively At Waldorf
Interest Heavy in Indiana Film.
Swoon interest for the bobby soxers and for those just slightly older keep things hopping at a live ly pace in “Week-end at the Waldorf” which opened yesterday at Loew's.
The “oh’'s” and “ah's” of the teens and twenties keep rising and falling 8s Van Johnson and Lana Turner emote. Walter Pidgeon turns on the charm for matrons and the masculine eyes falls appreciably on Ginger Rogers. The slightly fantastic story une rolls in the fabulous Waldorf hotel. Ginger Rogers, who portrays a famous actress, gets involved in a romance with War Correspondent Pidgeon whom she believes to be a crook. Meantime, Lana, as a slightly mink-happy stenographer, fluctuates between furs und jewels with Edward Arnold-and a dashing air corps captain, Van Johnson. The evolve from the Rogers-Pidgeon romance get ascreamingly funny after the rumor that they are married gets around, with Ginger still believing him a crook. After leaning “fer” and “agin” Lana finally decides between Arnold and Johnson--guess who. Nice costuming, snappy dialog make up for what you can’t quite swallow in the story. Bob Benchley, one of the screen's favorite funnymen who died this week, is one of the featured characters in the story. :

ment of the story-of Robin Hood, in a special version by Ralph Rose.
