Wife Opened Hock Shop Sake is a fermented rice drink. is a standard Japanese condiment that adds piquancy to their tasteless dishes. : Sokubei Mitsul had an enterprising wife. When the Mitsui sake shop got off to a slow start, she opened a hock shop on the same premises. Business picked up immediately, The samurai ‘conld hock their swords for money to buy Mitsui sake without going around the block. Sokubei’s wife outlived her husband by 40 years. She was a stringsaver and a shrewd trader. She exerted a firm guiding hand on their son Hachirobei who became the real founder of the financial house of Mitsui, She picked his wife who bore him six sons, the forebears of the six main family branches in the modern house of Mitsul. Five other collateral branches were added later. Dry Goods Merchant In 1673 when Hachirobei Mitsui was 52, he packed up his family and moved to Kyoto. He opened a dry goods store and hung out a famous Mitsui sign, still preserved, In bold Japanese characters burned in hardwood, and surrounded by the Mitsui three-bar crest, it read: “Cash payments and one price only.” It was a drastic innovation, The one-price-only procluded bargaining, which seems to be a birthright of all orientals, The Mitsuis made it stick and it was successful. ‘The emperor's fortune recently was estimated at $106,000,000, In 1037 the private holdings of Baron Takakimi Mitsui, head of the house, were estimated at $130,000,000, When the baron came into the estate of his father who retired in 1933 his taxable inheritance was assessed at about $55,000,000.
