PRICE CEILINGS FIXED ON CARS

Bowles to Release Figures In Few Days.’

WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 (U.P) You're going to know within three or four days how much that new car will cost. Chances are the retail prices will be higher than most people have expected. . Price Chiet Chester Bowles ane nounced “last night that the new car ceilings have been fixed but said they would not be made public for another three or four days. Manufacturers can publish their selling prices a day earlier if they: wish. Was Optimistio He gave no hint of how specific prices would rum, but other OPA sources said they probably would be “considerably ‘ higher” than was

Bowles said two months ago that new cars would cost “slightly more” than 1942 prices. When OPA received manufacturer's costs, however, it became apparent that Bowles was a bit optimistic. Meanwhile, it was revealed that the OPA and auto dealers have been battling over how much of the higher costs would have to be absorbed by the dealers, No Exceptions OPA’s policy throughout industry has been to require retailers to absorb a large part of the production cost boosts. Bowles emphasized that he will make no exception for car dealers.

“unfair’—as they have charffed— he would be glad to buy the distribution agency from one of the disgruntled dealers and “get in that business myself.” The commerce department's

commerce estimated that the industry will build 3,500,000 cars in 1948,
