Evening Wear Supply Lags Behind Demand |

By JOAN YOUNGER United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Oct. 30.—The woman who says she hasn't a thing to wear — take it from an expert — may be telling the truth when it comes to evening clothes. Jack Young, chairman of the evening clothes division of the New York Dress institute, said today the demand for evening clothes ~ was now 10 times the supply. “Everyone appears to be having parties, and entertaining and going to victory celebrations and the result is a terrific shortage of dance and dinner frocks,” he said. “It looks as if there will be literally a famine by Christmas.” Stylists reported that the lack of evening clothes had caused a boom in the “shortie” dress—the street length evening dress, usually made with cap sleeves, or none, and this season glittering with sequins or beads, Mr. Young said the chief hindrance to meeting the unprecedented demand for evening clothes was a shortage of fabric. He said production was still 50 per cent under pre-war years, and manufacturers were behind in deliveries.

Volce of the Turtle Some designers have resorted to evening sweaters as a cover-up for the situation. These are made high-necked, long-sleeved, form"fitting and embroidered with jewels or sequins, A new model is the turtle neck evening sweater slashed across the shoulders and down the back, with the turtle neck its sole "support. : © The turtle neck fad also has entered into evening and dinner * clothes, where it is topped with a bolero jacket. Favorite fabrics in the evening are satin, net with taffeta and even wool—all done in the new “elegant” mood. Kilegance has also captured the cocktail suit: Hattie Carnegie ‘showed it in pink satin with black brocade embroidery, Clare Potter showed it in black wool with a square evening neckline, While necklines vary from strapYess to the newer covered-up look, hemlines vrovide major interest.
