FANS APPLAUD
Performance Draws Big Audience at English’s.
By HENRY BUTLER Leonid Massine's + Ballet opened its three-day’ run at Eng-|
lish’s last night. i
Playing to a packed house, the | Massine company drew hearty applause for its skill, grace and, on the distaff side, glamor. In a varied program ranging from expert adaptations of conventional ballet routines to Mr. Massine's ingenious grotesqueries, such &s “The Barman” and “At the Dentist,” the company of eight had ample opportunity to display versatility. With a few exceptions, the choreography was Mr. Massine's. It utiljzed all the technical resources of the dancers, which, it may be said, are no mean resources. Ballet fans will find plenty to attract them in the current performances. May Not Seem Justified A person who scarcely knows the difference between an “entrechat”

views on conventional ballet, To the naive and sedentary layman, the tremendous expenditure of time and effort in acquiring ballet technique may sometimes seem | scarcely justified. The body as a| moving symbol of experience may | seem hampered by stylized techni-| cal traditions. That, of course, i§ a question of taste. To this reviewer, however, such, performances in last night's program as Jean Guelis’ *“‘Sajlor’s Dance” and the “Premiere Polka,” done by Anna Istomina and Yurek Lazovsky, seemed more significant than, say, “The Dragon Fly,” a solo by Bettina Rosay. Pretty Concepts One thing in ballet that strikes “the untrained observer is the pretWtiness and the preciousness of its concepts. Those qualities may be- +. come cloying. For that reason, lay- “ men are apt to prefer the more obi viously topical routines, the routines that tell a story. For feminine comeliness and masculine agility, for beauty of cos tume and excellence of musical accompaniment, the. Massine company offers good eye-filling, ear-pleasing entertainment.
KING GEORGE WARNS ATOMIC SCIENTISTS
LONDON, Oct. 26 (U. P.) —King George said last night scientists held their greatest responsibility ‘+ of all time for the humane development of atomic energy. The king, in an address before the centenary celebration ‘of the Imperial’ College of Science and Technology, said he hoped “wisdom may be found before it it too late” to use atomic fission to promote peace and raise living standards throughout the world. “The world faces destruction on & scale history neyer dreamed of," he said, In the hands of scientists and students lay not only an opportunity but a responsibility greater than men of science have ever known before.”
