Force to Expand. Program On. Electronics.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 (U, P.). ~Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson announced today that the army, taking a lesson from Pearl Harbor, is setting up a continuous | program of electronic research so! | that this nation never again will | | be caught unprepared. The work will be carried out by | the national bureau of standards, | which developed the proximity {fuse. The bureau said its aim would be to develop the best weapons and counter” weapons ever de | vised—"weapons such that no other | nation would ever dare entertain | the idea of an attack against us” | “Call it insurance if you will— | insurance that we can go to sleep | knowing that we will not be wiped |= out in a surprise sweep ‘by some = other nation intent on controlling the world and provided with methods of war unbeknown to us,” the bureau said, Patterson sald any scientific discoveries resulting from the research would be made available for peace-time purposes as long as it did not endanger national safety.
Develops Fuse
One of the bureau's first jobs will be further research on the proximity fuse, a tiny, radlo-con-| trolled mechanism which will set off a bomb, shell or rocket as soon | |= as it reaches the vicinity of its! target, eliminating the need for a = direct hit, The fuse, radar and the atomic bomb are listed as the top three allled weapons of world | war II The research will be conducted | 2 by the bureau’s ordnance develop- | ment section under Harry Dia-| mond, who directed work on the |= proximity fuse. New discoveries | will be made available to the public = through the bureau's contacts with | industry. : Specific examples, the bureau said, include new radio tubes, mif=f fature radio parts, tiny high-pow-ered electric generators, mechanical and electronic controls, and =i new plasties which were discov-|= ered in the development of the | proximity fuse. Research will be done by several hundred physicists, engineers and technicians guided by the proximity fuse scientists. Their labora- |= tory will be a new half-million | dollar building on: the bureau |= grounds which will be finished | about Nov. 1. | = The bureau said plans for post- | war research into military elec- |S tronics were drawn up as long ago |= as October, -1044, and were set into |=
