Trish Take Thriller at Tech;

Rockets Humble Redskins; Shortridge, Washington Beaten

Cathedral's Irish were a.step nearer the mythical Indianapolis high school football title today following their tingling 14-7 triumph over Tech in the standout battle of the season. Broad Ripple’s Rockets humbled Manual, 32-7, in another city rivalry contest while other Indianapolis teams were dropping decisions. Shortridge bowed at New Castle by virtue of a point after touch-

down, 13-12, and Washington's Continentals failed in quest of a] victory at Southport, 28-12, On the county side of the docket, | Lawrence Central lost the Mid-| State Conference title to Plainfield | by dropping a 14-7 decision. Action-Packed Period Cathedral and Tech battled through three scoreless periods before the action-packed final quarter which decided the struggle on the East side field before nearly 8000 fans. The first Irish touchdown drive started late in the third stanza and shortly after the start of the fourth, Joe Gatto plunged into scoring territory from the 2-yard line to climax an 80-yard surge. Jim MecLinn kicked the extra point. Capitalizing on a Cathedral fumble on the Irish 35, Tech garnered its touchdown with the help of Capt. Joe Matfingly who crashed through center to tally. Harlan Sturgeon’s successful pass enabled Bob Freeman to reach the 2 and set up the scoring play. Bob Fischer kicked the extra point to tie things at T-all. McLinn Is Passer McLinn furnished the impetus behind the winning Irish marker in the waning seconds of play. The rangy halfback took a Tech kick on the 25 and brought it back to the 40. A series of passes from MecLinn to Jeke McHugh and Bill Sylvester, produced the marker. Sylvester dropped over the goai line with a matter of 12 seconds remaining. MeLinn added the extra point. Manual held a brief 7-6 lead in the first period of the game with the Rockets but the Redskins wilted before the Broad Ripple drive in the second quarter when the Rockets moved ahead, 19-7. Bob Berry scored first for the Rockets from the 4, but a pass play from Ronald Hallam to Jack Gallagher and Gallagher's conversion put Manual ahead, momentarily. Pem Cornelius went 35 yards for a Rocket touchdown in the second period and Ed Brown swept 29 for another, Brown converted on one of these. Cornelius added two more sixpointers for the Rockets in the third period and Brown converted! on one of them Two long runs by Halfback Gray!

and a conversion by Max Corey in the first period were the points which stood up for a Trojan victory at New Castle against Shortridge.

The Blue Devils battled their way to two markers in the final quarter and then saw time run out on them on the New Castle 20. Irving Ball went over from the 5 for both Shortridge markers but Bill Reels conversion attempts from placement failed. Washington enjoyed a brief 6-0 lead in the first period on Wesley Jones’ touchdown but the Cardinals forged ahead on a long pass from Kenny Bridges to Henry Tonges and a pass conversion for the extra point. Bridges scored from the 10 and ran the extra point in the second stanza. Southport added a third six-pointer in the third quarter on a pass from Lew Boggs to Tonges and Bridges again registered inthe final heat. Jones threw three passes to Fullback Ray Jacobs for the last Continental marker.

My word! The editor tells me my| batting "average for the first half of the season is .750. Har-rumph! While that is something less than] perfect, it's better than .749, and better than Ty Cobb, Hans Wagner or Rogers Hornsby ever hit over a similar period. Several mild upsets are on mv

card for Oct. 27, and attached are my forecasts. Many people will be surprised when Villanova defeats Tennessee. My favorite in the East is Lou Little’s Columbia eleven, a team I have decided to nickname the Lions. Not since A. A. Stagg and I teamed up have there appeared two finer touchdown artists than the Goal Dust Twins—by whom I mean Gene Rossides, the Galloping Greek, and | Lou Kusserow, of course. Like all good teams, Columbia also has one Irishman, a lad named Kondratovich., I'm going on record right now as saying that Columbia will .ail | through Brown, crash over Cornell, | plow through Penn, vaporize Princeton and destroy Dartmouth. A large order, yes, But, Egad! Knowing me as you do, you're aware that large orders are my forte. Haw!

5-Bout Pro Bill

Set for Armory

Arrangements for tomorrow night's five-tilt pro fistic bill to be staged at the Armory were completed today by Matchmaker Lloyd Carter with the signing of Pfc, Al { Deacon, Baer Field, Ft. Wayne, to {meet Tiger Kiggins, Indianapolis welterweight, in the four-round opening bout. Headlining the bill will be a 10round welterweight fracas between Gene Gudgill, one of Ohio's topflight welters, and Bob Simmons, Indianapolis, Indiana's in the division. A lot of interest will center in the six-round semi-final when > Roy Lewis, Muncie southpaw, tangles with Cpl. Dave Bruce, Baer Field. Both belters have been named as logical challengers for the state diadem now held by Simmons. Other bouts on the bill will pit Larry Gudgill, Dayton, O., against Curtis Fowler, St. Louis newcomer, at five rounds, and John Weatherford, local heavyweight, against Ted Newsome, Chicago, at four sessions.

Contract His 0. K.

NEW YORK, Oct. 25 (U. P).— The baseball “crisis” over the signing of a Negro by the Brooklyn Dodgers organization eased today when it appeared there would be no protest made to Commissioner A. B. Chandler by the player's former em-

ployers .in the Negro American league. W. G. Bramham, commissioner of

minor league baseball said at his office in Durham, N. C., that Robinson’s contract would be approved but suggested that the signing of Negroes would prove harmful to the game T. Y. Baird, white co-owner of the Kansas City Monarchs for whom Jackie Robinson, the new Dodger farmhand, played last season, said that he had been ‘mis quoted or misinterpreted” in reports that he planned such a protest,

Three Hoosier Pugs Kiss the Canvas

It doesn’t pay for some Hoosier boxers to engage in out-state competition. In bouts at Buffalo, N. Y. last night, Johnny Denson, Indianapolis heavvweight, was flattened by Phil Muscato, Buffalo, in the third round; and on the same card, Sparky Reynolds, Indianapolis welterweight, was belted out by Allen Faukner, Buffalo, in the second heat, And in Chicago, Roy Lewis, Muncle welterweight, was knocked out by Talmadge Bussy, Detroit, in the sécond stanza.

Hershey, Pittsburgh Bolster Leads

Hershey in the eastern division and Pittsburgh in the western dominated American Hockey league standings today and proved why last night. ™ Pittsburgh and Hershey each have eight points, but the Pitts burghers’ record was more impressive, showing four victories and no defeats. The Hornets swamped the Cleveland Barons at Pittsburgh last night, 7 to 2, with a well-balanced attack featuring sharp passing. Hershey tied the Providence Reds, 2 to 2, at Hershey with the Reds apparently happy to get out with a tie. ?
