OINTS A JOKE “FOR AIR CADETS

Discharges Offered 38,000 In Enlisted Reserve.

By ROGER W. STUART Soripps-Howard Staff Writer WASHINGTON, Oct. 25~To sore 38000 members of the air corps ‘enlisted reserve—chiefly 17, 38 and 19-year-olds—the army's point discharge system was a laugh

ay. oy youths, many of whom have been in service only a few months, have the opportunity to leave the army despite lack of points. © Meanwhile, other G. Is, manv with extensive battle service, are required to sweat out 70 points,

The cadets who choose to leave|

the service under the new ruling, according to the war department, will not be subject to the draft. Most of the group, the department said, entered the reserve from colleges. Age limits for air corps cadets are 17 to 26. Not Needed by Air Force

Reason for the new ruling, which puts the cadets in a preferred discharge position over the average soldier, is that the reserve has been scaled down since V-J day, Consequently the army air force no longer needs these youths. It was not explained why they could not be transferred to other branches to replace G. I.s longer in service, Approximately 10,000 of the cadets who are in flight or pre-flight train~ ing are being given a choice of discharge or continuing their training. The remaining 28,000, in advanced training, may choose disSharge, remaining in an enlisted status, or volunteering for the regular army, The war department has not yet compiled statistics on how many have chosen discharge. Status of 4000 Uncertain

Meanwhile, the brass hats have reached no decision concerning the future of some 4000 other cadets,

ing from the enlisted ranks of the alr forces or from other branches of the army, “We don't know yet,” the war department spokesman said, “whether these men will be discharged on the same basis as the other air corps enlisted reserve men or not. A decision will be announced shortly.” While the army is making up its mind, the 4000-—-some of whom served in the ranks overseas—are continuing their flight training. “If any of the 38,000 cadets choose to continue their training rather than go into civilian life, they will gign up for the duration plus six months, or until June 30, 1947, whichever date occurs earliest, the army explained,
