Freedom Decided On Korea's future was charted at the Cairo conference of the United | States, Great Britain and China in, 1943. It was decided that “in due course, Korea shall become free and independent.” v | President Truman since has an-| nounced that Russia will assist in carrying out this program, The situation has been complicated by Russia's action in assum-~ ling joint occupation with the | United States of Korea, the Soviets {taking over the northern part be{yond the 38th parallel. There is some mystery over how this came about. Dr, Syngman Rhee, veteran leader of the Korean independence movement now back in his country from exile in the United States, has said he learned at the San Francisco conference; that the decision was made at Yalta in the Crimea.

Against Division Dr. Rhee was outspoken in his opposition to the divided occupation in a speech at a welcome ceremony staged by Koreans for the United States army on Saturday. He declared the Koreans would rather fight and die than tolerate a prolonged division of their country. Dr. Rhee, former president of the Korean provisional government in exile, has been given every encour-

with other Korean independence leaders. He was introduced at the welcorfie ceremony by Lt. Gen. John R. Hodge, commander of the United States occupation forces, who said: “He is a great man who has given his entire life to the freedom of Korea.” Gen. Hodge also has invited Dr. Kim Koo, president of the Korean provisional government at Chungking, and other Korean leaders to come to Seoul. ‘There are difficult problems to be worked out—some 40 political parties to be dealt with, and hordes of Korean Quislings who got fat and prosperous by “co-operating” with the Japanese.

among the east Asian countries demanding their freedom. Unlike Indo-China, the Netherlands Indies or Malaya, there is no colonial question involved.
