“SWING TO LEFT

L Moderates Will Control Because Danes Fear Russia.

By EDWARD P. MORGAN Times Foreign Service COPENHAGEN, Oct. 24.—One of the fascinating peculiarities about Denmark today is that, while many Danes confess abiding fear of Russia, they predict that the left will win the national elections on Oct. 30. It is expected, however, that the Social Democrats will gain far more than the Communists and that the swing will be moderate, not extreme, like that of the Labor party victory in England. Denmark fears Russia on the ground that the Soviets did not make their intentions clear toward western Europe, and what they fear, whether true or false, about state affairs in eastern Europe heightens their anxiety, 4 Copenhagen Nervous

“We would like to think that Russia has no sinister motives,” a former member of the Danish underground told me, “but Moscow is making it very hard to believe.” Other Danes classified the failure of the London foreign ministers conference as a major tragedy indicating that the Big Three could not get along, and opined that now it would be just a matter of time before the United States. and the

A-BOMB TEST ON SHIPS CONSIDERED

WASHINGTON, Oct. 24 (U, P.). —The navy is considering using vessels of the captured German and Japanese fleets in atomic bomb tests, the United Press was informed today. Over-age United States vessels also may be used instead of being scrapped. Both the army and the navy want to know what the atomic

Soviet Union were at war, i Russian occupation of the Danish | island of Bornholm, just now terminating, has made Copenhagen extremely nervous. You can hear all sorts of stories about how badly the Red army troops behaved themselves there, but you must make elbow room for exaggeration. Denmark still has trouble with Quislings, Only a few days ago 2 Col. Riis, one of the chief figures of the underground during the German occupation, was assassinated in | Jutland as reprisal for criminal action against Danish Nazis. Territorial Problem There is a territorial problem here, too, with which any new government may have to wrestle—the question of Schleswig-Holstein, about half of which remained Ger-

day, when the United States army returned the Lion of Isted, historic Danish war monument, from Berlin, King Christian X remarked that it should eventually go back to its original location at Flensburg—, which is now in Germany. The press interpreted his words as a demand that the German part of Schleswig-Holstein be returned to Denmark. 2 Many Danes, however, argue that the acquisition of this territory, now thoroughly Germanized, would be a constant source of trouble,
