STEPHENSON CASE
~ JUDGE LIST PICKED|
One of three judges chosen by Indiana Supreme Court Clerk Thomas Williams will hear ex-Klan Dragon D. C. Stephenson’s plea for a retrial. The list of prospective special judges included Madison Circuit Judge Joseph A. Dickey of Anderson; Marion Circuit Judge Lloyd B. Claycombe of Indianapolis and Hancock Circuit Judge John B. Hinchman of Greenfield. Atty. Gen. James A. Emmert will eliminate one name from the list, and Stephenson will reject a second. The third will rule on Stephenson's latest bid for freedom, unless he refuses to occupy the bench. In that case, Clerk Williams will select a new list of names. The state and counsel for Stephenson will decide the judge via elimination in the Hamilton Circuit court at Noblesville. The Stephenson case was venued from there recently by the supreme court on motion of the state.

‘SEA HURLS MINES 'ON ENGLAND'S SHORE
LONDON, Oct. 24 (U. P.).—Hundreds of inhabitants of the English | southeast coast took shelter inland | today as 50-foot waves in the Eng- | lish channel ripped mines loose and {hurled them against the shore. Special royal navy mine disposal | squads quickly rendered most mines | harmless, but at least two exploded | and caused widespread damage. One blew a huge gap in the undercliff walk at the popular summer resort of Brighton. Another exploded at the base of cliffs at Highcliffe, seven miles east of Bournemouth, shattering shop fronts, damaging other buildings and rocking houses a half mile away.

was necessary to trim. Riverside park, for example, 37 times, three times more often than ever before. He estimated the large cut in the budget of the department leaves it entirely ~unprepared for another heavy grass-growing season in 1946. Almost all grass-trimming equipment is more thary eight years old and the budget request for funds to replace 30 per cent of the equipment was slashed, permitting only 5 per cent replacement, Mr. Brown pointed out the availability of federal surplus equipment but said the department cannot take advantage of it.
