Boilermaker ‘Spread Play’ Spread Ohio Bucks’ Line

The burly Purdue Boilermakers took complete charge of the line play against Ohio State at Columbus Saturday and opened holes large enough for a wagon to go through. Picture shows the gap made by the Purdue upsetters to permit Ed Cody to ramble for a touchtbown unmolested. Note how the Ohio forwards have been taken out-—and how. Fullback Cody tallied three touchdowns as Purdue chalked up its fifth straight victory by the amazing score of 35 to 13.

Burlington's Late Penalty

Shot Enables Barons to Gain 4-4 Tie With Capitals

By BOB STRANAHAN

Our Yianapolls Capitals were within a minute and 18 sevonds of a victory over the Cleveland Barons in the American Hockey league race last night when forced to settle for a 4-4 deadlock with the chame pions. A penalty shot by Center Tom Burlington which whistled past Goalie Floyd Perras enabled the visitors to gain the tie despite a hat trick by Jerry Brown and some other fancy play which kept the. 8186

fans on tenterhooks most of the evening. Burlington was bearing in fast— all alone—on: Perras , when Defenseman George Ritchie hit him. Tom sailed into Perras and the Caps’ goal-minder was stretched on the ice for a while, There seemed to be a question

for a time about the penalty. At le&ist, Perras was in not such good shape to face the major shot given

Burlington and it swished into the nets at 18:42 of the deciding heat. Hornets Take Lead The tie, coupled with Pittsburgh's triumph over Buffalo, enabled the Hornets to grab first place in the Western division from Coach Johnny Sorrell’s boys. The customers had barely settled ih their seats before Cleveland connected. Center Les Cunningham came barreling in from the left side and made good on the first Baron shot of the game. It was at 1:23 of the period. Goalie Harvey Teno and the Baron defensemen beat off all Caps’ scoring thrusts for the remainder of the period, thanks to some fancy work by the Cleveland nettender, Brown Scores Jerry Brown got the first of his goals after 4:37 of the second period, however, to square the count. It was a waist-high shot which

came after assists by Tony Buko--

ren and Hugh Millar. The second period was a battle ar the goalies until only eight seconds of the stanza remained. Little Pete Leswick then sent the Caps in front when he beat a rebound into the cage after stealing the puck from, the Cleveland defensemen, Rosy Rossignol and Andy Branigan were in the penalty box on miners during this heat but the Barons couldn’t count during their absence, Then came the third period fireworks. Cunningham Connects Cunningham slammed in a rebound shot at 41 seconds to tie things up at 2-all, Lou Trudel and Phil Hergesheimer had helped ad-

vance the puck so they were given assists on the play. Brown's second goal at 2:18 sent the Caps out in front once more. He wés crossing in front of the cage when he took a well timed pass. Bukovitch and Leswick got the assists. It appeared as though the home boys had the thing well in the bag when Brown connected again at 7:48 on a pass from Leswick to make it 4 to 2. But there was more to come.

Fraser Tripped

Midway in the period Branigan tripped Harvey Fraser béaring in alone and drew a 2-minute pene alty, Coach Bun Cook immediately threw five forwards on the ice and the strategy paid off. Burlington tallied the third Cleveland goal at 11:47 while ‘Branigan was still in the penalty box. Trudel charged Leswick with slightly over 2 minutes to play but the Caps couldn't hit with the Barons shorthanded. Millar got an interference penalty shortly after ward, then came the telling play which gave the visitors the tie, Moose Sherritt made his first ape pearance on the Coliseum ice in an enemy uniform, but if the cus tomers were expecting trouble from the big fellow they were doomed to disappointment. The Moose was quite a well-behaved fellow save for a couple of tough body checks and wasn't anywhere near the penalty box.
