Gretel's father, reportedly singing his role for the first ume in English, kept a “pony” inside his hat. The audience saw it and roared. This is not to decry the performance, which, though uneven, had much to commend it. Humperdinck’s erudite and complex score makes a lot of demands, however, on singers and orchestra. There could have been more precision of rhythm, attack and pitch last night. Especial praise is due Olympia Napoli as Hansel and Mina Cravi Tas Gretel. Both excellent musicians, théy held the performance together. In the never wearisome “Children’s Prayer,” ‘familiar to millions of radio listeners, they sang with rare clarity and sensitivity. The story is sufficiently familiar. What strikes one as odd is that Humperdinck, dredging in the muddy folk tales of sadism, may{hem and cannibalism embalmed in Grimm's Fairy Tales, should have come up with a musie drams of extraordinary beauty. Typifies Italian Opers “Pagliacci” scarcely needs comment, save on individual performances, More than perhaps any other opera it typifies the late 19th-century Italian tradition. For a lot of people it is the opera, just as for a lot of people “Vesti la giubba” is the aria. Invulnerable to parody, it loses no vitality with time. And it furnishes a good argument against opera in English. Full understanding of all the trivialities operatic characters utter would destroy the mood. All you need to know about “Pagliacei” is that it is a drama of frustrated passion and compulsive revenge. The music does the rest, and Leoneavallo’s score is incomparable as good mood music.
