OTHMAN PINES FOR ATOM HEAT

Reporter Tires of Writing "About Coal Strikes.

"By FREDERICK C. OTHMAN United Press Staff Corréspondent

WASHINGTON, Oct. 17.—When

doesn't have to be stoked for 15 years, I shall let John L. Lewis and his coal mine pals have their fun in private. John L. can call all the strikes he wants. Ezra Van Horny can smash chairs. I won't be there, As far back as I can remember, seems like, I've been hot-footing it to the Shoreham hotel regularly while the coal men argued. They're at it again. Secretary of Labor Lewis B. Schwellenbach is praying for cold weather, and I'm getting weary of those seats in the lobby. Schwellenbach’s hope is that a few icy mornings will make the nation’s householders howl loud enough to reach the ears of the 308-pound Van Horn, the mine owners’ negotiator, and Lewis, who weighs almost as much, and who bosses the gents with the shovels. Me, I'm hoping for atomic fuel.

I get my atomic furnace, one that

Coal is' black stuff, anyhow, and makes ashes that have got to be hauled out. But until the urabium | furnace comes I suppose we'll have | coal strikes. | Mostly they have had to do with | wages. As a rule Joh L, doesn’t think his boys get paid enough This one is different. Lewis wants the mine foremen as members of his United Mine Workers union. Differ on Foremen The mine proprietors claim their foremen are executives, not laborers. They say that if Lewis gets them in his union, he'll go after the vice presidents next, Lewis says the mines have nearly 50,000 foremen and-they, 100, Work hard enough to be union men,

That, fellow operators of fup naces, is the sole argument involved in the strike which has

taken 208,000 miners from their jobs, shut down many a steel mill, and threatened the rest of us with a cold winter. I wouldn't attémpt to say which side is right; neither, apparently, would Schwellenbach. Having spent 10 days arguing with the boys until his necktie got more askew than usual, he called an intermission.

At this writing Lewis & Co aren't speaking to Van Horn & Co. except in shouts. This is what has become to be known as the impasse stage in the Shoreham performance. Lewis Is yelling, “Lockout.” Van Horn is retorting, “Absurd.” .

By SANDOR S. KLEIN United Press Staff Correspondent

CHICAGO, Oct. 17 (U. P). — Madam, that new electric range you've been waiting for is positively on the way, . I saw dozens of them, white and shiny, rolling off the production lines. But that's not your only wartime dream that's comidfg true. Electric dish washing machines, I can report, are actually being made; the kind that fits under the kitchen

sink and takes one touch of a button to spray, rinse, wash and dry that after-dinner accumulation. Radio Output Slowed

As tone of a group of 18 correspondents who are making a reconversion tour of American industry, I saw. all this today at the plant of the Edison General Electric Appliance Co. which only a few months ago was turning out ammunition, The company’s plant is fully reconverted, so far as facilities are concerned, but it will take until the end of the year to attain full production on the ranges, dishwashers, water heaters and other electrical appliances. There's some bad news to report, however, about another item that a lot of people have been thinking about for ~Christmas—radio sets. Frank A. Hiter, senior vice president of Stewart-Warner Corp., says there won't be nearly the number

Roll.

Hiter told the reporters that the best possible pre-Christmas SPU by. the whole industry is’ 3,000,000 | sets. War Production Board offi- | cials had estimated about 25,000,000 would be ready for Christmas pres- | ents, The trouble is, Hiter said, that! makers of vital components are re- | luctant to go ahead at present | prices fixed by the Office of Price | Administration. The newsmen went through the | corfipany’s radio plant, found it all | tooled up, four production lines | ready, but no radios. Once the | parts start coming .in, Hiter said, the plant will be turning out about 5000 sets a day. Prices will be! something around the 1842 level for comparable sets. Hit ‘Slow-Down’ Causes { R. W, Turnbull, president &f the company, said he expects to get ap-| proval from the OPA of a “national price policy” under which the new| reconversion goods will be priced uniformly throughout the country. |

He figures the items will sell at) around the 1942 prices. During a visit to the Johns-Man- |

ville plant at Waukegan, Ill, the reporters heard Corporation Presi-| dent Lewis H. Brown say that re-| conversion in general is “stalling” for a half dozen reasons, Among these were the demand by labor for 52 hours pay for 40 hours; former war workers ‘going on vacation”; sub-normal output per man-
