Opponents Warn eal Los Angeles Meeting.
1.08 ANGELES, Oct. 16 (U. P.) — Leaders of 400 civic and labor organizations, unable to keep America Pirst Leader Gerald L, K. Smith from speaking here, warned today
sympathizers and massed pickets. The city board of education last night spurned demands that it reseind its action allowing Smith to speak at the Polytechnic high school auditorium at a “Ham 'n’ Eggs” pension rally tomorrow. Oomedian Eddie Cantor and writer Dorothy Parker were among B00 objectors at the meeting who asked the board to reverse its decision on grounds that appearance in Los Angeles of the isolationist leader would be “dangerous to the peace and order of the community.” The speakers, some of whom are assisting California Attorney General Robert W. Kenny in organizing mass lines of “anti-Fascist” pickets at the rally, said they feared outbreaks of violence might occur between Smith “provacatuers” and the pickets. Called Fascist Spokesman
Cantor told the board he was speaking as “a private citizen, a father and a grandfather,” He claimed that Smith on several occa~ sions had attempted unsuccessfully to prevent his appearing on radio programs. “I ask you: to rescind the permit which allows this man the privilege he would deny me because IT am a Jew,” Cantor said. Attorney-Author Carey McWilliams charged the issue was not one of free speech but whether the taxpayers of Los Angeles “are required to provide a platform for .native Fascist spokesmen.”
Decline Censoring Job
Philip M. Connally, secretary treasurer of the Los Angeles C. I. O. council, warned that “it is impossible today to prevent large numbers from picketing a meeting called by Smith in his brazen return to Los Angeles.” Board President Lawrence Larrabee, upheld by spokesmen for the Civil Liberties Union and the Public Affairs Forum, said he had been informed by the county counsel that the board has no right to act as a censoring body and was unable legally to refuse Smith's wpplieation for use of the hall.
