‘Corsets to Be Back Again— 3 Good News’
By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Seripps-Howard Staff Writer CORSETS are coming back. That's the best news we've had in a long time. One of the worst results of the war is the shape it has left women in. Even girls bulge in all the wrong places, and scads of middleaged sisters have developed odd protuberances. They look like half
There is a pre-war school of thought which disapproves of the girdles altogether, the exercise fiends. They scoff at the weakness of females who depend upon rubber and whalebone to keep themselves together. Harden up the muscles, they shout. Hold the tummy in by will power, Keep in shape by. rolling, stretching, Rendize and other acrobatics.
I'VE noticet, Bewever, when these lates reach a certain age, a good girdle adds to their charms. The fashion models also wear ‘em. They're an improvement to the thins as well as to the extra stouts. Bony angles, which are no prettier than excess fat, get that streamlined look which a good foundation garment gives. The corset is also a wonderful aid to morale and good béhavior—a safeguard against the sort of weakness which attacks women at certain moments when the male com=panion is clever in the arts of blandishment. Feminine virtue took a sudden dip when girls discarded the old armorplate which used to encase theirs charms: Uncomfortable as they appear, corsets stiffened grandma's backbone. She couldn't unbend as easily as modern girls. The restraint of her excellent corset protected her from ardent masculine advances, which she also experienced, in spite of her clothes which now look so funny to us.
