YOUR G.I. RIGHTS... By Douglas Lassen | Boards Permit Boys 18 fo 20 To Graduate Before Draft

WASHINGTON, Oct. 5—Here are some questions regarding the drafting of young men: : Q—My son will be 18 years old next month and is still in high school. He bad been - having trouble with His arm, which was broken about five years ago and never mended properly, This was why he hadn't been drafted. A month ago he had an operation which fixed the arm completely. The doctor says he will soon be sble to pass the army physical. He is a ‘good student and we would like to have him finish high school at least. What are his chances of being drafted? A—According to the latest regulations of selective service he will not be inducted until he has been graduated. Q—I started college this fall. I am going to be 18 in a month and I understand I might be drafted before I finish the semester. What should I do to be deferred? A-—-Write to your draft board and explain your case. Local

boards have heen instructed to defer cases such as yours at least until the end of the term. Q—My son has been having difficulty with several courses he is taking ‘in high school. . The teacher found out that he was deferred from the draft to be graduated next June. She threatens to have him drafted if he doesn’t improve his school work. Can she-do this? A—The regulations state that he can stay in high school with a deferment as he pursues his course of instruction “continuously and satisfactorily.” It would be a question for the local board to decide whether he was doing this. Q—My brother was sick for several years and is behind in school. He will be 20 years old in two months and at his last physical exam was declared fit for service, Can they draft him? A~His deferment for being in high school runs out when he

reaches 20 years of age.

Poage has been named chairman of a five-man house agriculture subcommittee whica will study the ways and means of developing an American raw- silk industry. The commit= tee will look into sll phases of the questidn, he said, and will try to determine if such an industry would be economically feasible. Poage said the committee's interest was focused on silk by a Texas businessman who testified before it recently. The businessman, Ernest Mims, has a plant at Mineral Wells, Tex, that is producing raw silk,
