big Chicago hotel, several times. It reminded one startled reporter

soldier in Trinidad. said it was just a dog. But it was a gentleman from Texas, a delegate to the convention of Veterans of. Foreign Wars. He and his friends had been celebrating, and they had gone off and left him, and he was lonesome. “Conventions didn't used to be like this,” he said, “They're' getting old. They can't take it any more.” ; Another delegate put it more for. mally on the convention floor. He said the V. F. W, ought to demand that all world war I veterans get [a pension. National Commander Jean Brunner replied that when the { Spanish war veterans got an automatic pension, it was because of their age, and that when the time comes the world war I vets will get one for the same reason. | They're Quieter Now "Comrade Commander,” sald the delegate, “that time has come.” This convention, the first big veterans gathering since 1942, shows that it has been a long time since Chateau Thierry and the Argonne. These delegates aren't ready for the wheel chaif by any means, but the wild veterans convention that used to stop traffic for hours and terrorize hotel employees are things of the past, unless the new generation of veterans revive them. They are having their traditional drinking parties, singing sessions, and arguments over who won the war. But the parties don't last as long as they used to, and those who have hotel rooms go to bed. Some of the delegates still try to make love to the girls who run the elevators, but to quote one of the prettier ones, “They don't fry very hard.” Consider War II Official Leaders aren't worried about this. They claim over 700,000 members among veterans of this war, and say that in another year or two the. new men will take over. There are only about 200 delegates from the new generation but some of them are working with a group of older members to try to elect a world war II veteran to one of the. national offices at the closing session tonight. They argue that if the V. P. of W. doesn’t do this the American Legion will at its convention next month and use it as a strong argument in the battle for new members, The hopes of world war II veterans to elect one of their number to the post of junior vice-com-mander, almost a guarantee of promotion to commander-in-chief in the next few years, looked brighter {as a strong bloc of vote-holding convention “oldsters” threw their strength into the scrap, Other Candidates The candidacy of Edward K. Nellor, Washington, D. €. youthful army veteran, was pushed for the race already entered by Ray H. Brannaman, Denver, Col, present chief of staff, and Leroy Omer, Kentucky department commander from Louisville. Nominations tantamount to convention election includes that of Joseph M. Stack, Pittsburgh, to move from senior vice-commander to commander-in-chief and Louis E. Starr, Portland, Ore, outgoing Junior vice-commander and V. of

Beer in Germany

Is for Yanks Only

FRANKFURT, Oct. 4 (U, P)~ Germans in the American zone faced a beer drought today when occupation authorities ruled that only breweries producing for the United States troops will be permitted barley or malt from this
