The trouble spots cover a con- | siderable portion of the earth's sur-
They include in the Orient the Dutch East Indies, Malaya, French Indo-China, Burma and India. On| the threshold of Europe are Pal-| estine, Syria-Lebanon and, other Arab areas. # The situation in the Far East has been greatly complicated by the war. The natives there for the most part have never been satisfied with the overlordship and exploitation of the western white men. During the war, those who put any faith in the “co-prosperity” promised by the Japanese were sadly disillusioned. 2-Way Pressure They were subjected to two-way pressure. The Japanese were inept and often brutal in their occupa~ | tion, but did a great deal to promote nationalist feeling, especially among the Indonesians of the East Indies and Malayans, The Japanese propaganda barrage was increasingly heavy as the tide of war changed in favor of the allies. "At the same time, the natives were given promises by the western powers of self-rule in one form or another which they now want to see fulfilled.

been taken more or less for granted. Economic Difficulty.
The difficulty of the three European powers Is essentially economic rather than political or defensive, although defense of her imperial lifeline enters largely into Britain's position in the Near East. For Britain, Malaya is a highly valuable economic asset, The revenues from rubber, tin and other products are more important than ever, now that the need for dollars to prevent the collapse of the sterling bloc is imperative, From the British viewpoint, selfrule now among the divided Malay states would be unthinkable, Indian Problem Burma has been promised independence after 1948, but sprawling India presents a more difficult probJem. Britain feels that she has to maintain financial control in India for the time being because of her own shaky economic condition, | France and the Netherlands like- | wise are depending heavily on their overseas empires to restore. their post-war conomy, It is doubtful if either is greatly worried about defense, The difficulty in reaching political agreements at the London conference may have been due in part to failure to put enough emphasis on this underlying economic problem, which until solved is a definite barrier to complete realization of
