‘Capt. Eddie’ At Indiana
Film Gives Unusual Portrayal of Great Era
Machines—prayers—and the faith of a man and woman--are the real characters in the picture, “Capt. Eddie,” which began yesterday at the Indiana. The human beings, headed by Fred MacMurray in the title role of Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker, and Lynn Bari as his wife, give excellent performances as the supporting cast. Out of the life story of America’s world war I ace of aces emerges a subtle surprise. The picture is not {of a great man alone, but of a great time in history. The realization that fhe years which contain two of the world's most horrible wars, are also a time of greatness, comes as a shock. Gives Pacific Scene Beginning in October, 1042, when Rickenbacker and his crew are lost in the Pacific, praying and giving up hope of res cue, the scenes flash back’ to the story of the ace flier’s childhood and youth. Little Eddie and his father both worship machines and the miracles they can perform. Darryl Hickman as the boy Eddie turns in a humorous and touching role. Humor goes right on as Eddie grows up and Fred MacMurray portrays his courtship of Adelaide Frost, who becomes his wife. Emotional Film Star The picture deals quickly with its hero's rise from chauffeur to General Pershing until he has downed his 26th German plane, becoming the toast of a nalion, When the flashback scenes catch up to the little lost party in the Pacific and their eventual rescue, an audience has laughed, maybe cried a tear or two, and grown
