PASTOR DECRIES

Says Teachings May Cause Feuds Among Pupils.

Dr, E. Burdette Backus says religious education classes for school children stir up religious feuds among pupils and sometimes create friction between parents and children. ; Dr, Backus, minister of All Souls Unitarian church, outlined these views in a sermon yesterday morning in the church, He gave the sermon because of the many .inquiries he has had concerning the recent so-called “atheist trial” at

man testified at the trial, The wife of an Illinois university professor and mother of a school boy, brought suit against the schools for permitting religious education on release time for public school children, . Not Atheistic View

Dr. Backus states emphatically that Unitarians do not share the atheistic position of the professor's wife but are in complete agreement with her in her opposition to the religion classes. “Unitarians consider such classes a violation of the American principle of the separation of church and state,” said Dr. Backus. “I have heard a good many people who do not belong to any religious denomi~ nation tell of the way they and their children have suffered as the result of such classes,” he added. “Children like to conform and when they cannot conform to such ‘a custom as the religion classes, they feel set apart and are the victims of a good deal of pressure. This makes conflict between the home and the program carried on in the school, May Cause Feuds

“In some cases, children have withdrawn from my own Sunday school and enrolled in others or in none because of the school influence. This has caused the parents great distress of mind, For our whole conception does not conform to the orthodox standards with which pupils are brought’into contact in connection with the public schoo] religion classes.” Dr. Backus quoted from the report of an investigation made by the public education committee of New York which confirmed his objections to the classes, The report, among other things, spoke of the “religious feuds” caused among school children by the religion classes. “American schools are our greatest cultural achievement,” concluded Dr. Backus, “they should deal

secularists nor as Methodists, Baptists and the like.”
