JOE WILLIAMS SAYS....
Louisville N ine Hits Form and
NEW YORK, Sept. 24.—Judge K. M. Landis, if he were alive, wouldn't like this and perhaps Senator A. B.
{isposed to tell you a baseball story that has a race track
sackground. It is a story that comes to rhe from Joe Judge, one of Washington's coaches, and it reaches back to the crooked world series, 1019, when the White Sox sold out to the gamblers. Judge told me the story in the Washington dressing room the other day. “I'm out to the track, Jamaica I think it was, in the fall of that year. I'm with Rube Marquard, the old left-handed pitcher who was developed by Indianapolis. We both like to play the horses and we are going about our business in a casual, simple sort of way when all of a sudden a fellow stops Rube and says: “ “Bet all you got on Cincinnati to win the first two games.’ You ; tee Cincinnati is playing the White Sox in this series. And then he says: “Take all you win on the first two games and bet it back on Cincinnati to win the series.’ .
IT WAS THE FIXER TALKING “WELL, I am speechless. I know the White Sox. I see 'em- play all season. I never see a better ball club. And I never hear a fellow talk with so much confidence. I mean, like saying Cincinnati can’t miss winning the first two games. So I say to Rube, I say, that guy's practically telling you: the series is fixed. And Rube says to me that's exactly what he’s telling me, and do you know who he is?" = “Well, it turned out to be Arnold Rothstein, notorious gambler who later was to be pistoled to death because he welched on a bet, The man who definitely fixed the series, no matter what anybody tells you to the contrary.
CARRIES INFORMATION TO OWNER GRIFFITH “SO WHEN I hear this,” Judge says to me, “I go to Griff (Clark Griffith, owner of the Washington ball club) and tell him. Griff laughs in my face. The series -opens the next day. He sees the opening game, comes back overnight, calls me in. ‘You were right,’ he says. ‘The series is fixed.’ “I'm not sure, but I think Griffith started the investigation which led to the blow off. And even to this day I don’t think I would have any doubts about that series if I hadn't heen to the track with Rube and met the man who was later identified as Rothstein.”
Medals Prolong City Series By Upsetting Mallory Nine
It will take two more games to decide the winner of the annual city amateur baseball tournament, which got under way Aug. 25. Gold Medal Beer pastimers prolonged the event yesterday when they handed P. R. Mallory its initial tourney defeat. The three remaining teams, Gold Medal, Mallory and Kingan Reliables now have one defeat each in the double elimination series. The Medals have won five con-
tests, while Mallory and Kingan have four victories to their credit. The Reliables were idle yesterday, Norm Beplay's Beermen knocked off the favored Malloryites with ease, winning 9-3 behind a 14-hit attack, 12 off starting pitcher Joe Lease and two off Art Cook, who went into the game in the sixth inning. Johnny Twigg of the ~~ Medals limited his opponents to ‘ eight scattered safeties. Mallory got off to a one-run lead in the initial half of the opening _ stanza on three hits and a sacrifice. But the Medals came back strong in their half, batting around to bang out five hits, which combined with a pair of walks and a stolen base, produced five runs and a lead they “ held throughout the game, . Homer Stull gave the Mallory . fans something to talk about when he smashed a home run over Vic~ tory field's left field wall in the : eighth inning.

Attendance was 11911, Pitcher George Diehl held the Saints to five scattered hits as the teams completed the first phase of their four-out-of-seven series before moving to St. Paul, where the games will be resumed tomorrow night. Pressure on Cubs in National
NEW YORK, Sept. 24 (U. P)— This is the week the shaky Chicago Cubs will find out whether they are traveling on the road to glory or the boulevard of broken dreams. ; Psychologically and physically at a disadvantage as St. Louis presses ever closer, they must battle the Pittsburgh Pirates in a double= header today while the Cardinals rest up for the showdown series at Chicago which begins tomorrow, Victorious, 7 to 3, over the Pirates yesterday, the Cubs had the second game rained out. That made two games necessary for today since Saturday’s game with the Pirates also was postponed. Seven More to Play
The Cubs now are a game and a half ahead of the Cardinals with seven more to play. They need victories in five of them to clinch a tie even if St. Louis wins all of its remaining six. Six Chicage vie tories will assure them of the pennant regardless of what the Cardinals do. To Outflielder Andy Pafko went

Pennant Races At a Glance
NATIONAL LEAGUE Won Lost Pet.
By One Game Have 4 More;
NEW YORK, Sept. 24 (0. P)—Torturous hours of waiting began today for the Washington Senators, who must stand by idle while the Detroit Tigers play four more games which will determine whether they win, lose or tie for the American league pennant. Winning without a playoff game or series with the Tigers was an extremely distant possibility. The Senators, who muffed a golden chance yesterday by splitting their last two games of the season with the tail-end Athletics at Philadelpitia while Detroit was being shut out by St. Louis, can’t wim unless the Tigers lose all of their four remaining games. They will tie the Tigers if Detroit loses three and are out of the picture if the Bengals win two or mare. Gridders Have Park
Washington won't even have its own park in which to practice; but must go to nearby Bainbridge, Md. for daily workouts because Griffith stadium has been taken over by the Washington Redskins professional football team. Apparent victory became a bitter, |4-10-3 defeat in 12 innings yesterday when Emil (Dutch) Leonard blew a 3-to-0 lead after holding the Athletics scoreless for seven innings. The Nationals countered with ‘a 4-to-3 ‘victory on Rookie Marino
delphia’s victory when Erdie lofted a high fly in the 13th what appeared to be an easy out, but George (Bingo) Binks lost the ball in the sun and Kish got a double. «Walter Masterson, who pitched four hitless relief innings, walked Dick Siebert and George Kell singled home Kish with winning run. : One Game Down Had Washington won twice, ‘the team would have been only two percentage points behind Detroit. Now They are a full game down. A fielding miscue also set up the three-run Philadelphia rally that tied the score; Buddy Lewis dropped a fly by Mayo Smith. Then Cecil Travis muffed a grounder and singles by Dick Siebert, Buddy Rosar and Ed Busch tied in at 3-all. \ At Detroit, the Tigers got only two hits ih a 5-to-0 whitewash by Nelson Potter. 8
