KILLS HIMSELF AS OFFICERS CLOSE IN
MARION, Ind. Sept. 21 (U. P.). -~CGeorge Dennis, 79, former Chicago police officer, shot and killed himself last night in a cornfield as law enforcement authorities surrounded him for questioning in the slaying of Merton Duckett, 67. Dennis turned his revolver on himself after firing a wild shot at Grant County Sheriff Lora Puckett. With other officers, Puckett had closed in on Dennis after a man-| hunt through pasture lots and! fields. A short time before, Dennis’ friend and neighbor, Duckett, was found dead in the yard of the former policeman’s home. A trail of blood led to the rear of the Dennis house.
