Trinkle, pastor of the Englewood Christian church, will speak on “The Great Commission for This Hour.” The Rev. Mr. Marx served as administrative secretary and treasurer of the China mission under the United Christian Missionary society from 1922 until the beginning of the recent war. When war was declared, he became a prisoner in Shanghai and was held in an internment camp for nearly a year. He was repatriated on the second trip of the 88. Gripsholm. His associates say “his keen insight into affairs of the orient, with his|— calm acceptance of dangerous responsibilities without thought of personal safety, give him a high place in the list of China's friends.” Panel discussions of timely sub-
dress on “Why the Church” by Dean O. L. Shelton of the Butler School of Religion are all scheduled by the convention, A transcription of an address by President M. L. Sadler of the international convention also will be presented. Dr. E. L. Day is executive secretary of the Christian church union.
FBI INVESTIGATES SLAYING OF GIRL, 15
ELKHART, Ind, Sept. 19 (U. P.).—A blood-stained knife found] in an Elkhart public school playground was studied by the federal bureau of investigation today in anj attempt to track down the slayer of 15-year-old Sally Joan Young. The pretty Elkhart high school sophomore was raped and stabbed to death in the school yard last Friday night. An Elkhart postman, Maurice J. Stutsman, found the knife yester-| day near the scene of the crime.| Police said that dark spots near the weapon's hilt were blood stains. They forwarded the instrument. to the FBI, together with bits of flesh| taken’ from beneath the victim's fingernails. O. D. Anderson, 27, Negro, re-| mained in police custody in con-| nection with two previous alleged attacks and for investigation in the Friday night killing. Before the girl died, she described her assailant 8s as a : “dark man.”

About Fire Hydrants
ERHAPS the only time you’ think about fire ‘hydrants is when you see a vacant space along the curb, drive up by it, start to back in, and then notice the yellow fire hydrant that means “No Parking.”
<> <=
OR PERHAPS you reach your conclusions about hydrants when you have a collision with one and your car drapes its radiator atop sme of our “Darlings.” (That's the name of one make; the other is “Mathews.")
. <r
_ NORMALLY there are about forty hydrants hit by autos each year, with twenty being broken »ff completely. This number essened during’ gas rationing, sut please watch your driving iow that gasoline is plentiful again,
<>
<r oe
‘IN THE WATER works business, we think about fire hydrants all the time. And what's
more, we ‘do something about
them almost constantly. Right now, we are getting every fire hydrant in the system— there are 6,574 of them—in tiptop shape for winter and the coming year. Fire hydrants must be ready in case of fire.
| 1A
<Ow
OUR MAINTENANCE crew started testing hydrants early this month and will be completed by the end of November—before freezing wea cludes a number of items connected with the operation of the hydrant; also the appearance of
, Testing in- -
the hydrant, especially as to its accessibility. :
The testing crew handles mis nor maintenance on the spot, but repairs that require more time or material are done by a follow-up maintenance crew, <> ONE THING which must be ‘taken care of before winter and freezing temperatures set in is the matter of water remaining in the hydrant. Although there must be plenty of water available when the firemen connect the hose to the hydrant and turn it on, there should not be any water in it at other times. If water is there, it might freeze in the winter and put the hydrant out of service,
<= Oe
AFTER FIRE HYDRANTS have been used to put out a fire, they are inspected by our Fire Service Inspector to be certain
that they are in good working
condition for the next time they are used. Some folks call fire hy-
drants “Silent Sentinels”; they never sleep—always sealy to
help fight fire.

THIS OILING and testing work now going on is the second routine of the year on fire hydrants. We painted the northeast and central districts this summer. (Passersby would say, “Paintin’ 'er yeller, ain’tcha, bud ?” Fire hydrants at one time were painted red or blue, but yel-
low is how being used because of its better visibility, day or night.) ‘ ANYWHERE « « + « + « +» « ANY TIME N= al WA a
