Youngsters’ Needs Shape Congregation's Policies
By EMMA RIVERS MILNER
Times Church Editor The’ Church of the Covenant upholds its tradition as a haven for | children in opening its doors to week-day classes in religion for public |
school pupils this semester.
Whereas the affairs of most churches seem to revolve about the wishes and tastes of adults, the needs of children have shaped the pros gram of the Church of the Covenant of the Reformed Church in
America,
The pastor, the Rev. Allen B.| Cook, says quite frankly that his
chief work is in connection with children and the home. Approximately 85 persons belong to the Church of the Covenant. But in contrast to this, the average Sunday school attendance is 160. Also 210 boys and girls were enrolled in the dally vacation Bible school in spite of an epidemic of mumps in the neighborhood.

with the future church in mind so that nothing of consequence will need to be torn out or changed. The congregation expects to erect the new edifice next summer. It is, of course, a coincidence that the Church of the Covenant has a very “righteous” setting, It stands on the edge of Christian Park and faces Temperance st.
The visitor, aleft to signs of color and interesi, asked if the orderliness of the church and its records might be attributed to its Dutch ancestry. For it will be recalled that the Reformed Church in America is a child of the Dutch Reformed church which sprang up in the Netherlands about the time of Martin Luther.
Not “Very Dutch”
‘The Rev. Mr, Cook says there is nothing “very Dutch” about the church except for the names of ‘a few of his parishioners, the Vander Veens, the Dewitts, the Vander Baans and others, and the occasional playing of the organ of a stately Psalm according to the Dutch manner. However, the pas-
the Netherlands and was graduated from Hope college and Western Theological seminary, both located in Molland, Mich.
His church ministers to the Chris tian Park community, he says, dwells little upon doctrines and not at all upon its Dutch heritage.
Works With School
The Rev. Mr. Cook co-operates constantly with public school - 82 having conducted a recent Bible contest there. Of the six winners of coples of a Bible, one was a Jewish child and three were Negroes, The pre-Easter chapel serve ice he has led several times at the request of the principal is a dramatic event of the school. Then the pastor gives a talk on the crucifixion ard a large “rugged cross” and Easter hymns are. featured,
A pile of stones on the church lawn offers testimony of the lively youth for truth groups organized” by the Rev, Mr. Cook. The stones will be used for an outdoor fireplace and worship center for youth gatherings,
Painting Treasured
One of the greatest treasures of the church is a copy of Sallman’s “Head of Christ" presented originally by the church to Mrs. John Offringa on her 100th birthday. Mrs, Offringa died a year later leaving the picture in turn as a bequest to her church, The pulpit chairs, communion table and reading desk were given by Warrant Officer John Nauta stationed now at a post near Laurinburg, 8, ©.
Children from school 82 will attend classes in religious education on release time each week in the '| Church of the Covenant, the only church of its denomination in Indianapolis. The week-day classes for public school children of all denominations ‘are being conducted in approximately 17 churches of the city in accordance with a state law,
