Synagogs Here to Observe + Day of Atonement. -

1 By EMMA RIVERS MILNER Times Church Editor Every synagog in Indianapolis will stand open all day Monday in observance of the solemn Day of "Atonement. Yom Kippur, or. the Day of Atonement, will begin at sundown . Sunday and continue until the same hour Monday. It will climax «¢he Jewish High Holy days which opened with the New Year, Friday. The faithful will fast, pray and f attend synagog rn, without fail on Cantor Glass that day. The traditional ram’s horn, or shofar will be sounded, candles will burn in houses, symbolizing prayers for the dead, the “Kaddish,”. will be recited, the “Kol Nidre” chanted and memorial services held. Chants ‘Kol Nidre’

Cantor Myro Glass will chant the *Kol Nidre” in a special Yom Kippur broadcast tomorrow at 9:45 p. m. over WFBM. Rabbi Israel Chodos will give a talk and Mrs, Evelyn Borofsky-Roskin, organist, will accompany Cantor Glass. All three giving the program are om the staff of the Beth-El Zedeck temple. The broadcast is sponsored ‘by the ASAPH organization. The “Kol Nidre,” an ancient prayer set to plaintive music, is the very core of the services held on the eve. of the Day of Atonement. It asks for forgiveness for all sins even those committed unwittingly. The reading of the Book of Jonah with its emphasis on the brotherhood of man, sincere repentance and the belief that he

combine to make the spirit of the Day of Atonement. Prayer for Rightegus _. ‘“Kaddish” is a prayer reall memory of the righteous of every nation and every creed. In its official bulletin, the Indianapolis Hebrew congregation extends this greeting on the eve of Yom Kippur: “We will meet this year for the High Holy Days in a world at peace. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the passing of the war's end. May our prayers, sincere and heartfelt, join with those of our co-religionists throughout the world and help to speed the day of worldwide understanding and brotherhood.” Rabbi Morris M. Feuerlicht will preach on “Are We Different?” Sunday at 7 p. m. in the temple of the Indianapolis Hebrew congregation. + ‘Eternal Scapegoat’ Rabbi Maurice Goldblatt will give the sermon entitled “Eternal Scapegoat,” Monday at 9:30 a. m. preceding the children’s sermonette at 12:30 noon and memorial seryices at 3:30 p. m. Kol Nidre services will begin at 6:30 p. m. Sunday in the Temple Beth-El Zedeck. There will be reading of the Torah at 10 a. m. Monday followed by a 10:45 a. m. sermon by Rabbi Chodos and memorial services at 11 a. m, Monday afternoon services will be held At 3:45 and 5 o'clock. The Central Hebrew congregation will attend services conducted by Rabbi Nandor Fruchter Sunday at 6 p. m. and Monday at 7 a. m. Services for Dead

Cantor Abraham Portnov will assist Rabbi 8. A. Katz with Atonement day services Sunday at 6:30 Pp. m. and Monday at 8 a. m. at the Sharah Tefilla synagog. Services are scheduled for the Knesses Israel synagog Sunday at 6:30 p. m. and at 8 a. m. Monday ‘with Rabbi David Shapiro and Cantor Samuel Levin officiating. Rabbi Samuel J. Fox oconduct services at 5:30 p. m. and preach at 7 p. m. on “What is Home?” Sunday at the synagog of the . United Hebrew congregation. Cantor Albert Cooper will chant the music. Monday observance will be at 8 a. m. and at 11:30 p. m. when Rabbi Fox will give the sermon titled: “Who is Real?” and conduct the memorial services for the dead.

‘Nuts’ to Word, McAuliffe Says
