Navy Refuses to Tell How _' "Cipher Was Broke.

By NED BROOKS Scripps-Howard Staff Writer WASHINGTON, Sept. 14.—8till a top-drawer secret with the navy is how and when it cracked the Japanese cipher code, a feat which contributed materially to our Pa-| cific victories and cost the life of at least one high-| ranking Jap militarist. Navy officials decline to say whether the code was broken by their gryptologists or obtained through channels of secret intelligence, ‘They refuse even to adMr, Brooks pit ofcially that the code came into their possession. But the evidence 1s abundant that early in the war—and perhaps before Pearl Harbor—the navy was receiving and decoding the most secret of Jap radio messages. Even more surprising is the evidence that the Japs continued to use the code Jong after they had heen given grounds for suspicion of its security. Cracked Early in War The navy’'s possession of the code, it is now certain, enabled the Pacifie command to perfect its strategy for the battle of Midway in June, 1942, an engagement which removed the threat to the Hawajian islands and cost the Japs four airplane carriers, other warships nd 4800 men. Defense Minister John A. Beasley of Australia sald recently that U. 8. navy intelligence had cracked the “Jap code before “the battle of the Coral sea, which occurred a month before Midway. The recent reports on the Pearl Harbor disaster, however, indicate in several places that the contents "of secret Jap communications were known to Washington authorities at that time, The state department, for example, had advance knowledge of the message which Jap Ambassador Kichisaburo Nomura and Adm. Concealed in Report The contribution of the cracked tode to the Midway Victory was adroitly concealed in Adm. Ernest J, King's report on the engage “ment, issued in March, 1944. The navy's chief recounted that car. riers and supporting wessels had been shunted to Midway from the South Pacific because our strate gists were “acting on our best estimate of the situation.” The Japs, he related, were aware that most U. 8. navy strength had been in the South Pacific “and it seemed reasonable to expect that they would make the most of the opportunity to strike us in the central or North Pacific, or both.” The evidence now is that intercepted coded messages forewarned the Pacific command of the Midway strike and that U, 8. forces knew of the size and course of the invading force. The battle, often called the turning point of the war, cost our navy only the carrier Yorktown, the destroyer Hammann and 307 personnel. Led to Trap Precise knowledge of Jap messages also led to the aerial trap laid for Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto,| the war lord who hoasted that the! peace would be dictated in the] White House. A message sent by the late Navy Secretary Frank Knox resulted in the dispatch of army filers from Guadalcanal to intercept the bomber carrying Yamamoto and the plane was shot down in flames on Bougainville on April 18, 1943, Neither the army nor navy has disclosed how the admiral's route was obtained. But the army identified Lt. Col. Thomas G. Lame phier Jr, Washington, as the officer who shot down the plane. Even after this feat, the evidence indicates, the Japs continued to trust their, long-impaired cipher.
