‘Government Cannot Give Us Everything’

By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Seripps-Howard Staff Writer BOCIAL SECURITY is a dream

which may be coming true for, great numbers of people. The end of pov-erty-——can it really be in sight, as some say? Will old age never be a burden again? That depends on several things. For social security, unemployment

do not bring contentment. They are only the means of attaining it. We know this is true because we have }watched the lives of men who piled stocks and bonds and cash in the bank, They felt no fear of poverty. Yet, if that is all they saved, they found it not enough. Thousands ot other {lls trailed them-—discontent, boredom, that hollow. feeling that comes when life seems over and futile, No matter what the government guarantees, it cannot fortify us against the worst disaster—the-re-sults of our own cussedness, » n a

80 MAYBE we should caution young people to put something away besides social security taxes, and to depend upon their own initiative and ingenuity for those mental treasures which all men ‘must have {to be either happy or free. These are. the reserve funds saved for mind and spirit. We get them from books and music and art, and an interest in things outside ourselves. If men and women are forced to retire from work at 65, and if the life span continues to increase— what's to keep us from utter misery in old age, except our- own stored up mental treasures. The meaning of security will be lost, unless we learn while we are young that life means more than mere living, and that happiness is not found in material comforts. When that great day comes, which is promised by those who say the government must be the benefactor rather than the servant of men, we'll still be lost souls in limbo unless we have within ourselves personal security against poverty of heart and mind, intellectual inter ests and love for God and man, These things no government can give us.
