"Test Tonight

By EDDIE ASH Times Sports Editor Back in the American post-season playoff after an absence of one year, the Indianapolis Indians, secondplace finisher.in the 1945 regular race, oppose ‘fhe. fourth-place St. Paul Saints out at Victory field | tonight. The contest is scheduled to ‘get under way at 8:30. At the same time, first-place Mil- " waukee entertains third-place Louisville in the Cream City. In the best-in-seven series, three games are to be played in Indianapolis and in Milwaukee before play shifts to St. Paul and Louisville. * Friday is an open date to give the . teams ample travel time. The series will be completed in St, Paul and Louisville, » The winners then will meet in the playoff finals, best in seven, and the ultimate winner will represent the “A. A. in the little world series against the winner of the International league playoff. Competed in 1943 In 1943 Indianapolis subdued ToJedo in the first-round playoff but was eliminated by Columbus in the finals. Last year, Louisville defeated Milwaukee in the first round and Bt. Paul defeated Toledo. And in the finals, Louisville defeated St. - Paul. This is the American association’s 2th playoff and the fifth for In- “ dianapolis. The Indians have never - survived one but there is always ‘a first time and they are all set to

laurels to Victory field, The playoff records show that the pennant winner has tough sledding in the post-season competition. Both In 1943 and 1944, the Milwaukee - Brewers won the pennant and were eliminated in the playoff. And Kansas City met a ‘similar fate three times, in 1939, 1940 and 1042. Match Southpaws Tribe Manager Bill Burwell intends to use his southpaw ace, Jim ‘Wallace, against St, Paul here to“night, end Ray Blades, skipper of Rh ors is expected to counter ith a southpaw, Tom _Sunkel or pk Lanahan,’

ore the days of playoffs in the Indians played in two itle world series, in 1017 and in 28. In 1917 they defeated Toronto, games to one, and in 1928 they jeated Rochester, five games to one in a scheduled nine-game series. Victory field reports a brisk adsale for the Indians’ three tilts with the Saints although much depends upon the weather, There is advance in prices over regular season games but season passes are “ng.” for the series,

Although Manager Bruno Betzel of the Royals refused to name a starter, International league fans believed Roy would begin the playoffs, Montreal won the league pennant by six full games and was a heavy favorite to win its semi‘final playoff round against the ‘ fourth-spot.
