German Banker § Says Fox Engaged in Plot."

By JOHN McDERMOTT United Press Staff Correspondent FRANKFURT, Germany, Sept. 6.

-Jeld Marshal Erwin Rommel,

general, was named by a fellowconspirator here as a member of an assassination ring which tried unsuccessfully to kill the Fuehrer in July, 1944. The “desert fox,” who died under mysterious circumstances shortly after the plot was discovered, was said to have been brought into the conspiracy because of his enormous popularity with the German people and the army. + The informant, a German banker named Reinhard Brink, told allied intelligence authorities that he had! been a member of Rommel's staff and played a leading role in ‘the murder attempt himself. Brink told his story in an effort to bolster his claim that he was an anti-Nazi, even though he held membership in the party. He said that Rommel joined the e¢onspiracy after a heated quarrel

tioning. Brink’s charge appeared to corroborate rumors flying about Germany before and after the Nazl sufrender t6 the effect that Rommel was killed by the Nazis for plotting against Hitler. Rommel’s widow recently told American Investigators that the gestapo accused her husband of taking part in the conspiracy and forced him to take poison.
