“A 62-year-old man today was the first defendant to be tried under the recentlydévised plan of dealdng with adult sex pflenders in Juvenile court. : . The defendant, Earl J, Baker, 090 West dr.. Woodruff Place, was given the maximum sentence for contributing to the delinquency of a young girl—180 days at the state farm and a fine of $500. At a recent meeting of county judges, law enforcement officials and others, it was agreed that adult offenders would be tried in juvenile court on a eontributing charge, rather than in criminal court on more serious charges.
Facilitates Sentencing Behind the plan supported by Criminal Court Judge Willlam D Bain is a belief that the defendant often escapes punishment as a result of legalties and delays when the case is heard in criminal court. A crowded court callendar and legal maneuvers by attorneys often felay a case in criminal court until juvenile witnesses are no longer #vailable to testify, Judge Bain said. + Although a defendant is heard oh ‘a lighter charge in juvenile -gourt, it is believed his punishment f8 more certain,

Invalid Star In Comeback
Peters Works In
Radio Drama.
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. § (U, P.) ~~ Gallant Susan Peters, who has lived in a wheel chair since she accidentally shot herself in the spine nine months ‘ago, last night appeared on a coast-to-coast radio show, clearing the first hurdle in her struggle to resume her acting career, . The beautiful young Alm star had herself wheeled before the microphone to play the romantic lead opposite ‘teen-age hero, Van Johnson, in a ‘Theater of Romance” production of “Beventh Heaven.” Miss Peters had bright yellow flowers in her hair and a twinkle in her eye. And the bobby=soxers
Susan
wound up cheering for her, It was her first public appearance since last New Year's day when her hunting rifle accidentally discharged, sending a bullet through her lung into her spine, She has been paralyzed from the waist down ever since. Fooled Doctors “I was pretty scared to face that audience in a wheelchalr,” Miss Peters admitted, “and my hands were shaking so hard I could hardly hold the script. But I did it!" And now she can scoff at doctors, who warned ‘her she probably never could return to acting. “1 fooled 'em three months ago by taking a few steps,” she grinned. “I'll be in front of the cameras again
{before very long, too. They can tell
me I'll never walk again If they want to, I know better.” Miss Peters said she had to argue until she was “blue in the face” to get her doctors’ permission to make this radio appearance. Finally they went into a huddle with Miss Peters’ husband, coast guard Lt. Richard Quine, Time for Singing “They decided it'd be good for me, I guess,” she smiled. “Or else, they Just gave in to keep me quiet.” Miss Peters says her radio appearance is just the first step up. “Next, I'd like to get back in pictures,” she declared. “If I can't find a part I can play sitting down I'd like to be a producer, That's something I can do in a wheelchair.” But Miss’ Peters insists she won't be tied to the wheelghalr for long. When I interviewed her just before the accident she was taking dancing lessons in hopes Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer would put her in a musical, “And I'll get in it yet.” she announced. “Besides, think how much free time I have to get my singing voice under control.”
