FOREST HILLS, N., Y, Aug. 29 (U. P.) ~The going gets rougher in the national amateur tennis championships at Forest Hills today but the pressure still won't be strong enough to bother seeded stars headed by defending champions Pauline Betz and Sgt. Frankie Parker. : ‘The ranking racqueteers. proceeded without incident as the tournament got under way yesterddy— with the exception of five foreign seeds from five countries. Unranked Americans were too tough for them as they bowed out, leaving only Alejo Russel of Buenos Aires and Brendin Macken of Toronto as the sole invaders still in the‘running. Parker Draws Bye Parker, drawing a first round bye, blew into the third round along with Rolor Ray of Sinton, Tex., his opponent today; seventh seeded Lt. Seymour Greenberg of Chicago, former clay court champ who faces Tom Molloy of Panama City, Fla.; third ranking Francisco (Pancho) Segura of Ecuador, who meets Lt. Hal Surface of Kansas City and air cadet Bob Falkenburg of Hollywood, seeded eighth, who plays Jim Livingstone of San Francisco. The women’s singles, where Miss Betz is seeking her fourth consecu-
| tive championship to tie the record
of Helen Jacobs, developed according to plan with all the eight seeded stars—seven of them Californians—reaching the second flight. Miss Betz halted Betty Rosenquest, South Orange, N. J, 6-1, 6-1, and now meets Mrs. Marjorie Van Ryn, Washington. Second seeded Mrs.
Ted Hartley, Roanoke driver, will bid for his third straight victory at the Speedrome Friday night when the third program is presented. Hartley was the winner of both 30-lap features last week-end when racing was resumed at the plant on State Road 52 and Kitley ave. Thirty drivers already have entered cars for this week's card.

§ To Detroiters for 13th Time
By CARL LUNDQUIST United Press Staff Correspondent NEW'® YORK, Aug. 29.—In 1944 the Browns won the American league pennant because they could whip the Tigers; in 1945 the banner
may go to the Tigers because they
can beat the Browns.
Maybe it is revenge that ‘motivates the Tigers, but so far this season they have done better against the Browns than any other club
in the league. They won their 13th last night and they did’ it easily,

victory behind a home run barrage. which netted a 10-to-1 Tiger triumph at St. Louis. Last year St. Louis win 13 of 22 games with Detroit. It was an important game for Detroit to win, coming after three straight losses to nondescript Indians at Cleveland. Moreover, it cooled off the Browns who had swept back into the pennant picture with 19 victories in 24 games. Cullenbine Homers
Newhouser got oft to a 3-to-0 lead in the first inning on Roy Cullenbine’s three-run homer. In the third inning Hank Greenberg and Bob Maier made it 7 to 0 with a pair of two-run round trip wallops. The Tigers were hard on the Brownie pitching staff, four men working the game with Jack Kramer, the loser. The victory kept Detroit a game and a half ahead of Washington which put on a late drive to top the ast place Athletics at Philadelphia, 6 to 5. Rick Ferrell won the game
